The Wapakoneta Redskins blanked their third straight opponent with a 7-0 win over the Kenton Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls soccer match Tuesday in Kenton.

Wapak’s shutout Tuesday against Kenton followed ones against Fort Jennings and St. John’s.

The win gave the Redskins a 4-0 start to their season and a 1-0 record in WBL play.

“The kids are playing hard. They’re believing in the system we’re trying to run,” Wapak varsity coach Ross Kantner said. “Getting three shutouts is helping their confidence.”

Lilli Schaub paced Wapak with two goals Tuesday.

Kantner, though, was most impressed with Schaub on an assist she had on Brittany Pequignot’s goal.

“Lilli played well tonight,” Kantner said Tuesday. “Her goals were hustle goals, but her best play of the game was an assist. She had a pass that topped the 18. She put the pass in there and Brittany fired it in. Lilli had great awareness on that play. From a soccer standpoint, I’m more happy about that assist.”

Adding one goal each for Wapak on Tuesday were Sara Warner, Pequignot, Mackenzie Custer, Josee Kaeck and Aimee Bendele.

Wapak had a 5-0 lead just minutes into the second half and was able to start substituting frequently for the rest of the game.

Mikayla Halfhill was Wapak’s goalkeeper during the shutout Tuesday.

The Redskins outshot Kenton 15-3. Wapak will play its home opener Thursday in a non-league game against Coldwater.
