WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Board of Education posthumously nominated U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman for the 2014 Distinguished Alumni award at a regular board meeting Monday night.
Zimmerman was killed in action on July 16, 2013, in Afghanistan, from wounds he suffered when his vehicle was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade. He was 25 years old.
“It still makes me emotional when I think about it,” W-G Superintendent Christ Pfister said. “He was just a wonderful person and an outstanding student who wanted to serve his country — unfortunately he lost his life.”
Zimmerman graduated from Waynesfield-Goshen High School in 2005, where he was involved with football and baseball. In the army, he was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, where he was an infantry squad leader. He received numerous awards while serving, including a Purple Heart.
W-G Board of Education member Tom Brookhart said selecting Zimmerman for this year’s award was an easy decision.
