LIMA — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity boys golf team opened its 2013 regular season Tuesday, finishing 14th out of 18 schools at the Hawthorne Hills Invitational, hosted by the Allen East Mustangs, at Hawthorne Hills Country Club.
The Tigers shot a team score of 414 and were led by Trey Crumrine’s 92 on the par-72 course.
Rounding out the scoring four totals for W-G were Lake Turner (97), Gabe Wilcox (107) and Brandon Turner (118).
W-G varsity golf coach Craig Ludwig assessed his team’s performance Tuesday, on the first day of regular season competition.
“I was pretty happy,” Ludwig said. “We had only one official practice, and all of my guys play football except two of them.” “We have a lot of work to do on our short game,” he said Tuesday. “Watching the guys, I saw 10 putts we could have taken off our score. We can definitely improve.”
West Liberty-Salem grabbed the invitational title Tuesday with a top score of 321. Allen East was runner-up at 326.
The top 12 teams in Tuesday’s field shot 364 or better while the bottom six shot 408 or higher.
Parkway’s Brian Schatzer was the tournament medalist with a 3-under-par score of 69, five strokes better than the runner-up, Elida’s Trent Cutlip.
The Tigers will host Northwest Central Conference opponent Riverside at 10 a.m. Thursday at Prairie View Golf Course in Waynesfield.
