W-G board honors class of 2014

WAYNESFIELD — Waynesfield-Goshen High School graduated 37 seniors Sunday afternoon.

School principal T.J. Winkler introduced the class and welcomed family and friends to the ceremony.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation, Superintendent Chris Pfister announced the Distinguished Alumni award, which was given posthumously to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was killed in action on July 16, 2013, in Afghanistan, from wounds he suffered when his vehicle was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade. He was 25 years old.

Zimmerman graduated from Waynesfield-Goshen High School in 2005, where he was involved with football and baseball. In the army, he was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, where he was an infantry squad leader. He received numerous awards while serving, including a Purple Heart.
