By WILLIAM LANEY Managing Editor Two chambers of commerce in Auglaize County are “offering an ounce of prevention” when it comes to safety in the plant or the work site. The Wapakoneta and St. Marys chamber of commerces are sponsoring a pair of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) workshops through former Apollo Career Center instructor Dr. Jim Clark and his business Premier Educational Services. “These are training session for our industries and construction contractors who may want to offer training to their employees as to the proper safety procedures for their facility or work site,” Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dan Graf said. “It is good for them to attend these training sessions so they can become aware of some unsafe conditions and with that awareness they can incorporate proper safety practices or changes in their operation and equipment.”
A general business workshop is offered March 17-20, with classes to be held from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Veyance Training Center, formerly Goodyear Tire & Rubber, in St. Marys. A construction industry workshop is offered March 24-27, with classes to be held from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Wapakoneta Community Development Center, or the chamber of commerce office, in Wapakoneta. Graf explained there is a 10-hour and 30-hour component to each workshop. Clark is authorized to issue Department of Labor, OSHA cards at the conclusion of the class. St. Marys Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Kill or Graf can provide additional information on the topics to be discussed, which includes walking and working surfaces, electrical, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment and materials handling and storage. Graf said OSHA takes into consideration if employees have recently taken certification classes if an incident occurs at their facility when issuing fines. “There is no incident that prompted us to offer these classes, it is just part of on-going training that a business, factory or construction firm needs to maintain a safe work environment,” Graf said. “We just wanted to provide these workshops for area business owners and workers.” Graf said people interested in attending can contact either chamber or Jim Clark at 5774 A Hibernia Drive, Columbus, 43232, or on his cell phone at 419-230-5371. People can contact the St. Marys chamber at 419-300-4611 or the Wapakoneta chamber at 419-738-2911.
