With a few technology and communication glitches and parents learning along with students where they need to go, Wapakoneta City Schools students’ first day of class went without any major problems, administrators say.
“The school day is going fine,” Superintendent Keith Horner said Tuesday afternoon.
He said one of the biggest hurdles to overcome was a new pick-up and drop-off system at Wapakoneta Elementary School.

Rebidding package
Wednesday, 26 November 2008

A site bid package for a new elementary school will be rebid, members of the Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education decided during Tuesday’s board meeting.
Superintendent Keith Horner said due to different interpretations of the scope of the work, the packet will be clarified and rebid under urgent necessity. The decision to rebid was recommended by the construction manager, architect and legal counsel.
“We had seven bidders who all looked at the same document, but something on the document must have been confusing,” Horner said prior to the meeting. “Four bid one way and three bid another way.”
He said bids between the two groups differed by 18 percent in relation to an area to the west of the site that several contractors did not include in their bids.
“It made an obvious price difference,” Horner said.
He said they decided to rebid the site work to make sure everyone is fully informed about what the work entails.
“The reason we need to act on it soon is because we don’t want to slow down the process,” Horner said. “Site work is the first thing that needs done. We’re not looking at any significant delays with this. Because it was done urgently we’re allowed a shortened bid period that requires us to post it for a minimum of five days.”
In other business, board members approved the following personnel matters after meeting in executive session for 40 minutes to discuss appointment or employment of a public employee.
They accepted the retirement of Karla Wells as payroll-insurance coordinator in the district for 21 years. She is expected to retire July 1.
“She’s been a long steady employee,” Horner said. “Payroll and insurance is no small task. We wish her well.”
Board members approved the supplemental athletic positions for the fall of 2009, including, Doug Zimmer, varsity football coach; Kim Metz, varsity volleyball coach; Kim Leopold, volleyball assistant; Mark Cook, varsity cross country coach; Jodi Wehrman, middle school cross country coach; Mindy Erb, varsity girls soccer coach; Marc Dyrness, varsity boys soccer coach; Tony Hunt, assistant boys soccer coach; Ken Wayman, varsity boys golf coach; Dawn West, varsity girls golf coach; and Mike Klock, varsity girls tennis coach.
“We have most of the head coaches hired and just a couple of assistants to get,” Rex said.
Board members approved volunteer winter coaches for the upcoming season, including, Chris Debell, junior varsity assistant boys basketball coach; Brandon Steinke, freshmen assistant boys basketball coach; Dave Copeland, middle school assistant girls basketball coach; Tyler Shipp and Eric Beach, junior varsity and varsity wrestling assistant coaches; and Chris Feltz, April Rosebrook and Steve Rostorfer, bowling coaches.
Board members extended contracts for three substitute teachers and a substitute cafeteria employee for the 2008-09 school, as was a contract extended to Michelle Stauffer as an hourly cafeteria worker beginning Nov. 10 for $10.27 an hour for two hours a day, 188 days a year.
In other business, the board members:
• Moved band camp to YMCA Camp Wilson in Bellefontaine from Sunday, Aug. 9, to Friday, Aug. 14. The camp is changing locations because the previous site is switching its focus to all church camps.
• Donations of $5,000 each from the Community Foundation for Wapakoneta Middle School seventh-grade social studies teacher Anne Niemeyer and Cridersville Elementary School special needs teacher Melissa Hilty.
“While we obviously appreciate all donations, this one offered by the Community Foundation for the first time to teachers is so impressive to me,” Horner said. “I’m so impressed that local people want to support our schools and our teachers in such a positive manner.”
• The Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce donated $175 for the Wapakoneta High School band’s participation in the Halloween Parade.
Board members met in a second executive session following the board meeting to again discuss appointment or employment of a public employee or official, as well as to prepare for, conduct or review negotiations with public employees.
