With Lehman unable to make its scheduled Junior ACME contest against the Wapakoneta VFW Redskins on Monday night, a young Troy Christian team opted to fill the open spot, only to suffer a thumping.
After just five innings of play, Wapak emerged with a 20-2 victory over the Eagles.
“We were aggressive with the bats and pretty smart on the bases,” Wapakoneta coach Nick Sammetinger said. “Unfortunately, it was against a young Troy team.”
The story of the game centered upon the bottom of the first inning when Redskin Greg Stoll recorded Wapak’s first out of the game on a RBI ground out to first.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, 17 Redskin batters came to the plate before Stoll’s RBI made it 15-0. The ‘Skins added five more runs in the first to jump out to a 20-0 lead. With the game well in hand early on, Sammetinger started emptying his bench before his club ever recorded an out.
“It’s nice to get the other guys in so they can get playing time, which helps them get ready for tournament play,” he said. Fueling the 20-spot were numerous RBI hits, the biggest of which coming via a three-run triple to center field by Cale Tabler and a three-run double to right-center field by Josh Vorhees. Also recording RBIs for the ‘Skins were Shane Helmsetter, Derek Shark, Jordan Ruppert, Reid Emrick, Bertram, Coil and Mickie Grothause.
On the mound for Wapak, Kaleb Coil pitched two scoreless innings, Tyler Bertram surrendered two runs (both in the fourth) in two innings of work, while Tabler pitched an inning in relief.
“I was happy with the team’s performance,” Sammetinger said. “It is a good tune-up for the tournament which starts this Saturday.”
With the victory, the Redskins improve to 16-4 with two regular seasons games left to play. Wapak travels to Shawnee today at 6:30 p.m.
