By COURTNEY MILLER Sports Editor The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers edged out Indian Lake for a 174-178 victory at Prairie View golf course Thursday. Dalton Buffenbarger was tops for the winners with a 41, followed closely by Sheldon Shobe’s 43 and Corey Maxwell ‘s 44. Brad Smith and Zach Gilroy each added 46s. Leading the Lakers was Carl Gillespie, who shot a 42. The varsity Tigers’ record is now 16-8. Waynesfield-Goshen’s junior varsity team also defeated the Lakers, 202 to 208. Kyle Waitman led the JV with a 48. W-G’s next match is today at home against West Liberty. The Botkins boys, on the other hand, were not so lucky. Great individual efforts did not add up for the Trojans, as they were defeated by the Anna Rockets, 169-185. Scoring for Botkins was Graham Counts (42), Eric Ambos (44), Tyler Shaffer (47) and Cody Meyer (52). Medalist was Rocket Brandon Heitman (40). Botkins plays again at Minster today at 4 p.m. In a dual match yesterday, the Redskin women also could not hold on, as they were beaten by Bath, 213-224. Medalist for the match was Wildkitten Ashley Swartz, firing a 38. Runner-up honors went to another Bath golfer, Kaitlyn Dugan, and her 44 shot. The Redskin leader was sophmore Kristina Kessen with a 51, followed by junior Janelle Allen with a 54. Rounding out the scoring for Wapakoneta was junior Morgan Adkins (59) and senior Kelsey Anthony (60). Sophmore Katy Keckler (62) and senior Jessica Sawmiller (69) also played in the match. Competing in a head-to-head JV match was senior Audrey Fisher, who sunk a 63
Redskin varsity coach Dawn West said she thought her team played well, but they were overshadowed by the caliber of the Bath players. “Unlike in most sports, in golf you can’t do anything about how good your opponent is,” West said. “You can’t guard them, tackle them or really even play against them. You have to play the golf course ... the team and individuals that win (are the ones who) play the course the best. “ West said that working to lower individual scores would really make a difference in the team outcome. “If we could get all of our scoring into the low 50s with a few 40s in there, we would be right there with most teams,” she said. The Redskins will try again Monday in Greenville at 4 p.m. The distaff Redskins suffered a similar fate. At Celina, the home team defeated Wapakoneta 162-182. Top scores of the outing were from Bulldogs Scott Fleck and Darin Waterman, both shooting 40s. Leading the way for the ’Skins was junior Justin Haven’s 43. Coach Kenneth Wayman said he was pleased with Haven’s individual effort. “I give him credit because he stayed within himself and played his own game, regardless what the oppenents did,” Wayman said. Backing Haven was sophomore Landan Stahler (46), Phil Gabel (46) and juunior Justin Krebs (47). Seniors Kyle West (48) and Kaleb Coil (52) also played in the match. Celina moves to 2-0 in the Western Buckeye League, while Wapak drops to 0-1. Wayman said he was disappointed the team did not play as well as they could have, but he is still optimistic. “Hopefully, we can get on track by minimizing big numbers on some holes,” Wayman said. “I tell my kids that bogies are your friend, pars are your best friends, and birdies are your girlfriends. Hopefully, that can translate into some low scores.” On a positive note, Wapak’s JV boys won with a score of 199-233. Joe Cerda (47), Mike Yocum (48), Chase Metzger (50) and Clay Bailey (54) scored for the ’Skins, while Drew Wickline (55) and AJ Stroh (58) backed the foursome. |
