By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer Two things happened to the Wapakoneta VFW ACME Redskins that have not happened this season before Thursday’s game with Coldwater. The Cavaliers shut out the Redskins, and they earned a run-rule victory. Coldwater complete- game winner Kyle Ahrens pitched well the entire night, just two singles away from pitching in a perfect game. “That’s the first time he has pitched this year,” Coldwater coach Rommie Schwieterman said. “I had hoped to get four good innings out him.” While the Cavaliers starting pitcher got a complete five-inning game, Wapakoneta pitching gave up 12 runs in the game
If there is a silver lining to the pitchers’ performance, only three of the 12 runs were earned. Coldwater racked Redskins starter Drew Golden for five runs. Coldwater scored two more off reliever Chad Snider, including the second home run given up this year by Wapakoneta pitching. The Cavaliers collected their final five off of closer Ben Keckler. After Golden gave up a second inning lead-off single, assistant coach Jerry Krebs sent Snider to the mound. The Cavaliers Bill Geeslin reached on a fielder’s choice. Then Keith Schoenherr blasted a three-run homer over the left-field fence. Coldwater hit the ball well, batting around twice and collecting 16 hits, three for extra bases. The Wapakoneta offense, which played with renewed intensity in its last two games, came out flat Thursday and never really ignited an offensive spark. The closest the Redskins came to showing any offense was in the home half of the fourth inning. With two outs, Mike Bogan and Brad McKinnis hit back-to-back singles — the only Redskin hits of the game. Justin Krebs drew a walk to load the bases, but Wapak batters left all three runners stranded. One other positive in the game is the fact that in 18 plate appearances, Wapakoneta put the ball in play 15 times as Redskins batter struck only twice. The problem was that Wapakoneta batters kept hitting the ball at Coldwater fielders. Things don’t get any easier for the Redskins, who are back in action this evening when they host Fort Loramie. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at for 6:30 p.m. |
