By KAREN CAMPBELL Staff Writer Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members will say goodbye to a 41-year administrator while it continues to move forward into the future with construction projects at tonight’s meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, board members are expected to recognize retiring Operations Director Don Arnett, who started working with the district in 1967.
In his most recent position, Arnett has overseen non-certified staff, buildings and grounds, and special projects for the past 12 years. Prior to that, Arnett served as assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal and dean of students. His last day with the district is July 31. Athletic Director Mike Watt assumes the position of operations director the next day, Aug. 1. In other business slated for today’s meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at the board offices on Gardenia Drive, board members plan to review resolutions to approve program requirements as well as schematic designs for renovations to Wapakoneta High School as part of the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission project. Typically approved during two separate meetings, the resolutions are two different steps in the plan approval process for renovations. “Since this involves renovations, these lent themselves to doing them at the same time,” Superintendent Keith Horner said. “It’s difficult to go in and start over from the beginning. We were behind with the program of requirements plan and ahead of schedule with the schemastic design so in the end we’re doing them both at the same time.” The program requirements stipulate the number of students projected to be in the building and the number of classrooms to hold them, including the number of classrooms as broken down by individual subjects. Horner said enrollment at the high school is expected to remain stable at approximately 1,200 students. The schematic design plan gets more specific with designs for the renovation. “These plans just get more detailed,” Horner said. “They determine details down to the type of materials used, where walls are, and what kind of flooring is used where in the buildings. It gets pretty specific. With this we’re about 60 percent through the design process.” |
