By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer ST. MARYS — After four pitching changes, two rain-lightning delays and three innings when teams sent at least nine plays to the plate, St. Marys and Wapakoneta completed a summer ACME baseball game Saturday.
The 3 1/2-hour affair saw the two teams combine for 23 runs on 18 hits, with the Redskins holding off the Roughriders 15-8 for the win. “We’re off to a 2-0 start,” Wapakoneta coach Willie Sammetinger said. St. Marys broke the ice in the home-half of the first inning. Lead-off batter Aaron Homan, who reached on a fielding error, scored when Jake Taylor belted a triple to the fence in right-center field. He scored on sacrifice fly to center field by Sam Rammel to give St. Marys a 2-0 lead. The Roughriders would not score again until the sixth inning. Wapakoneta answered St. Marys scoring by tagging Roughrider starting pitcher John Lauth for five runs in the top of the second inning. Wapakoneta’s Mike Bogan led off with a single. Chad Downing singled to move Bogan into scoring position. Designated hitter Matt Deffenbaugh stroked run-producing double to left field. Deffenbaugh’s double was one of four extra base hits the Redskins hit Saturday. The Redskins Mike Rosenbeck took first after being hit by a pitch and David Herman reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Corey Lotridge tripled up the middle. He came home on a fielding error. The Redskins plated two more runs in the fourth inning. Rosenbeck doubled to open the inning driving the ball down the first-base line. As he trotted into second, the umpires suspended play because of lightning. Thirty minutes later Lotridge drew a walk. Rosebeck moved to third on a wild pitch and Lotridge stole second. Wapakoneta starting pitcher Justin Krebs helped his own cause with a run-producing double, giving the Redskins a 7-2 lead. St. Marys coach Russ Taylor called Justin Gilmore to the mound but the Wapakoneta players appeared unphased by the change. Lotridge singled to open the sixth inning, but Rammel threw him out attempting to steal second. The Redskins Mitch Beemer reached on a fielder’s choice before Gilmore gave up walks to Krebs and Tyler Etgen. Ben Keckler grounded out sending in one run and Krebs scored on a wild pitch. Downing and Deffenbaugh drove in a run giving Wapakoneta an 11-2 advantage. The Roughriders closed the gap to 11-8 with a six-run sixth inning. “We got down, but the kids battled back,” Taylor said. After Jake Taylor and Rammel singled, Tyler Norton loaded the bases reaching first on an error. Matt Huber singled and John Nunnally walked before Trevor Kill drove in three runs with a triple, forcing Krebs from the mound. Rosenbeck came in and gave up a triple to Homan, but got Taylor to ground out short, ending the inning. The third St. Marys pitcher, Josh Coffey, walked the first two Redskins he faced and then gave up singles to the next two batters. Coffey appeared to settle down striking out Etgen and Keckler, but then he walked Downing and hit Deffenbaugh with a pitch. Taylor sent Kill to the mound. A wild pitch sent a fourth run home before Kill got the third out in the inning — staking the Redskins to a 15-8 lead.. The Wapakoneta defense shut down the Roughriders in the seventh inning. Taylor and Huber led St. Marys at the plate collecting two hits on the day. Taylor also scored two of the Roughriders eight runs. Lotridge scored three times, while Beemer, Krebs and Rosenbeck each scored twice to lead the Redskins. Krebs and Downing each provided two hits. |
