Fuel concerns heat up
County Solid Waste Department needs more money for gasoline and propane
By KAREN CAMPBELL
Staff Writer
Increased fuel, propane and natural gas prices are causing departments and offices within the county to find other sources for extra money to cover costs.
Last week, increases in diesel fuel, but largely propane, have contributed to the need for additional funding in the Solid Waste supplies budget, District Coordinator Dave Reichelderfer said. Reichelderfer is the latest county department administrator to request a budget transfer to address high fuel costs.
Reichelderfer requested $7,000 additional from his cost allocation budget, which is typically set aside for unanticipated operation costs, be moved to the Solid Waste fund supplies line item. Commissioners, who approved the change, said he is just one of several department administrators facing that situation mid-year.

ACME advances to winners bracket at district tourney
BY PHIL McLEAN
Staff Writer
CELINA — Wapakoneta VFW ACME pounded out six runs on 11 hits, to beat Lehman Catholic, the Shelby County number one seed Thursday to advance in the ACME District tournament winners bracket.
"The team has worked very hard to get here," Wapakoneta coach Willie Sammetinger said.
It marked the first time since 2003, that Wapakoneta has appeared in the district tournament and they advanced with a 6-1 win over the Cavaliers.
The Redskins are to meet Marion Local, in the 1:30 p.m. game at Eastview Park. The Flyers earned the right to advance by winning a squeaker over Van Wert 7-6 in Thursday's second game.
Wapakoneta, which had beaten Lehman Catholic 7-2 earlier in the season, got behind starter and complete game winner Mike Rosenbeck, with an error free game.
Sammetinger had talked to Rosenbeck before the game started, about senior leadership, and Rosenbeck delivered, pitching shutout ball though five innings.
"Mike threw a gem," Sammetinger said.
The defense helped to polish that gem. Catcher Mike Bogan retired attempted base stealers with back-to-back defensives plays in the Cavalier third inning.
What started out as routine ground ball single, turned into a putout when Chad Downing fired a shot from his postion in left field to Josh Vorhees at third who met the Cavaliers Will Friedly for the second out of the fourth inning.
“Chad Dowing made a tremendous play,” Sammetinger said.
Rosenbeck then struck out Kameron Bartton to end the inning.
The only run Rosenback gave up started with a sixth inning double to Reid Owen. Owen scored on a single by Kaleb Goins who drove in the run with two outs in the inning. "We didn't string anything togther and Wapak had some nice plays getting our guys off of base," Lehman coachTony Pulfer said.
Barton popped up to Bogan in the inning, and the Redskins retired the side in order in the seventh.
In three of the first four innings Thursday, the Redskins got the leadoff batter on base.
Mitch Beemer opened the first with a single, Kaleb Coil followed with a single and Mickie Grothaus drew a walk. A sacrific fly by Bogan drove in the first Wapakoneta run of the game.
The Redskins padded their lead in the second inning, when Rosenbeck led with a single and Downing followed with a single. Rosebeck stole third and Beemer singled him home. Dowing scored on a wild pitch then Coil laid down a near perfect bunt to move Beemer into scoring postion. Borgan singled him home.
Wapakoneta scored twice in the fourth inning, drawing a walk from Lehman reliever Owen. Then with two outs, Grothause reached base. Bogan followed with a double that went to the fence and drove both runners home.
Adam Lenz suffered the loss for the Cavaliers giving up four earned runs on seven hits. Owen allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Rosenbeck gave up a single earned run, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
Beemer and Downing each scored twice. Beemer was 3-for-4 at the plate. Bogan was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Rosenbeck helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 performance.
In district action tonight, St. Marys will take on Anna at 6 p.m. and Lehman Catholic will meet Van Wert at 8:15 p.m. in the lossers backet.
In the winners bracket Saturday, Delphos St. Johns will meet Coldwater at 11 a.m., followed by the Wapakoneta-Marion Local game.
