Harrison case heard
By MATT NICHOLS
Staff Writer
A former Wapakoneta law enforcement officer’s future is now in the hands of seven state Supreme Court justices.
Former Wapakoneta Police Chief Dave Harrison’s 6-year-old sex crime case reached the pinnacle in Ohio’s court system Wednesday, as justices heard arguments from Harrison’s attorney Dean Boland and state prosecutor Scott Longo.
Each party had 15 minutes to present their case to the justices. After both attorneys argued their cases, a single word in Harrison’s sentencing entry and a grilling delivered to Longo by justice Maureen O’Connor left Boland optimistic about his client’s future.
In June, 2003, Harrison plead guilty to a six-count bill of information after child pornography was found on his computer. After entering his plea, the man who served as police chief from 1988 to 2002 was sentenced to one year in jail.
Seven months after he completed his sentence, it was discovered by county prosecutors that Harrison should have been sentenced with an additional five years of mandatory post release control, or probation.
During a court hearing, Harrison was given the option to either be re-sentenced or withdraw his plea. Harrison chose the latter, taking things back to square one.
With the plea withdrawn, the state of Ohio slapped Harrison with a 23-count indictment which he was ultimately found guilty of and sentenced to six years in prison.

Officials hire company to grade railroad tracks
By MATT NICHOLS
Staff Writer
BUCKLAND — Changing the flow of rainfall commanded the attention of Buckland Village Council members during Thursday’s meeting.
After taking the roll call, and reviewing the minutes of the last meeting, the councilors unanimously voted to hire Gallaspie Farm Drainage, of Wapakoneta, to perform work on either side of the railroad track in town as well as install two catch basins.
Buckland Mayor Dan Lambert said both sides of the tracks need to be re-graded. On one side, the work is to help make it easier to mow, whereas on the other side the work is to help redirect water flow.
“Water doesn’t get through the tile along Ridge Street, so we’ll re-grade it and clean the tile out so it runs toward the river,” Lambert said.
Lambert said one catch basin is to be installed by the new town building with the other being installed in front of the Olde Tyme Grille restaurant.
Councilors also unanimously approved to have Moeller Door Sales, of St. Henry, replace the garage door opener at the police building. A new keypad system will also be installed. The council agreed to discuss similar work for the fire department doors in the future.
After a brief discussion on the matter, council members approved moving the bulletin board at the Buckland Park to a more user friendly location, as well as painting it brown to match the surrounding foliage and posting important phone numbers and village information to the board as well.
During the meeting, Buckland Fire
Chief Todd Vorhees reported firefighters responded to six fire runs in June, totaling 71 for the year.
Also for the month of June, the Buckland Police Department helped one lost motorist, escorted funds to the bank, cited one person for expired tags, issued one parking violation and administered two verbal warnings.
