By ANDREA POTEET Staff Writer BOTKINS — Botkins Village Council members approved bids Tuesday for a joint street project with Jackson Center and Anna. Freisthler Paving, of Sidney, received a contract from the villages as the apparent low-bidder for Botkins’ portion of the project and councilors approved their bid of $89,363.60 using a less expensive asphalt mixture.
A bid by the company if asphalt was used was $95,853.60. Barrett Paving Materials Inc., of Sidney, bid $101,789.50. Some councilors expressed concern the asphalt alternative may not last as long as traditional asphalt, but Village Administrator Michael VanBrocklin said he is confident the substance should work fine for the roads for which it is intended. “Given the street and the amount of traffic on it, it should be fine,” VanBrocklin told the Wapakoneta Daily News after Tuesday’s meeting. Jackson Center is carrying the bids of the two other villages and is to award the bid to a company at their council meeting Monday. Freisthler Paving also is handling the roadwork for the other two villages. Road work in Botkins is to include grinding down and resurfacing East Walnut Street, patching East Lynn Street and cutting out and refilling a bump in the Industrial Park. Grindings from the work are to be given back to the village to be used on the baseball diamond and elsewhere at the community park. There is no set start date for the project, VanBrocklin said, but the project should be completed before school starts in the fall. Botkins took part in a similar joint road project last year with Anna. The joint road projects save money for the villages and the contracting companies, VanBrocklin said. Combining the construction work saves the contractor expenses relating to paper work and labor, VanBrocklin said. “The contracting company saves time and money, which can be passed on to the communities,” VanBrocklin said. Mayor Steve Woodruff also discussed plans for the commemorative 150th anniversary Botkins pamphlet a committee is working on. He requested residents with photos detailing the village’s history send them to the Village Administration Office, 210 S. Mill St., Botkins, for use in the pamphlet. |
