Wapakoneta Middle School teacher defended, board questioned |

Tuesday, 29 May 2007 |
I attended the Wapakoneta City Board of Education meeting on May 21. This being the first-time ever present at a school board meeting, I was curious as to how this proceeding would transpire. After mostly general school business topics were addressed and voted on (taking a mere 2 hours), a “hearing of the public” portion of the meeting (30 minutes) occurred. The vast majority of the people attending this meeting were there for this last 30 minutes to show support for the recently non-renewed Wapakoneta Middle School teacher Heather Buchanan.
The contract for Mrs. Buchanan was not renewed in a 3-2 vote. Carefully watching the three who voted against her, I was dumbfounded by the disinterest and inattention these three displayed while numerous letters were read and words were spoken in support of Buchanan. I assume these three are fairly educated. If this is the case, simple common sense, logic and true understanding of all applicable facts regarding Buchanan’s teaching records would indicate that this educator is a valuable asset, not only to this school district, but to this community. To not reinstate Buchanan would be narrow minded, foolish and vindictive. This school board was elected by the people of Wapakoneta and to the three board members against Buchanan, I say listen to the people, you’ll be surprised at what you hear. Christopher A.
