BY PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer LIMA -- Tyler Gallant hit a walk-off homerun in the home seventh and Shawnee took a 3-2 victory in ACME baseball action Tuesday. “I think that’s his first of the season,” said Shawnee coach Todd Grapner, who breathed a sigh of relief after facing the possibility of extra innings against Wapakoneta. A prospect he wasn’t too happy about. In the return match between the two teams, the Indians were obviously thinking about last Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Wapakoneta. “Wapakoneta always brings a good team,” Grapner said. The VYW sponsored Redskins climbed back into the game in the fifth inning. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Mike Rosenbeck opened the visitors fifth with a well hit single to left field and stole second, putting himself in scoring position. Josh Vorhees hit a ball back to Virgil Ellett on the mound, who turned and retired Rosenbeck at third. Vorhees reached on the fielders choice.
Mitch Beemer, who has been among the Redskins leading hitters this year, collected his first career homerun, a two-shot blast that cleared the left field fence at the 325-feet mark. Mickie Grothaus and Mike Bogan each collected singles, but Ellett got Matt Deffenbaugh to pop up to the Shawnee catcher. With a 2-1 lead all Wapakoneta had to do was keep the Indians off the scoreboard. With one out in the home fifth, Luke Morgan singled into right. Vorhees, who started the game for the Redskins, struck out Gallant in the fifth, gave up a single to Cody Kopilchack and David Gerad reached on an error. Clint Spencer drew an RBI walk to tie the game at two. Grothaus was called on in relief and got Indian pinch hitter Ben Jones to fly out to right field. Shawnee had received its first run of the game in the second after Kopilchack walked and Spence singled him home. Grapner went to Kopilchack for relief and he slammed the door on the Redskins in the next two innings and then Gallant got his home run to end the game. In addition to Beemer’s homer, Shane Helmstetter got a double and Grothaus was 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk. The loss drops Wapakoneta to 12-5 on the season and the Redskins will return to action this evening when Wapakoneta hosts Lima Central Catholic for a 6:30 p.m. start at the Wapakoneta High School diamond.
