by TOM HECKMAN Staff Writer TIFFIN — Wapakoneta sophomore Brad Wurster competes in the 300 meter hurdles, the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays. He has been involved in track since eighth grade and last year he started varsity.
While track can be a demanding sport, Wurster said he incorporates a basic training regiment. The sophomore said training is one of the key components that made him successful this year. “I just mainly do different sprint workouts and ladders,” Wurster said. “Maybe next yeah I’ll try the open 200, a little free-hand stuff.” Boys coach Mark Law commended Wurster for his hard work in practice. Law said if Wurster continues to train hard, he could make a splash at regionals in the coming years. “Brad was a pretty good surprise, because we weren’t sure how he was going to do,” Law said. “He made the finals, so he’s going to score in the meet. He’s got probably the eighth fastest time and he feels that he can better it’s his goal is to beat two guys in the finals and that’s a pretty good goal.” “This being his first year at a varsity meet and to place at the districts, I thought he did a nice job,” he added. Kevin Bittinger competed in track starting in the seventh grade. Bittinger said with each passing year, training and practice allowed him to improve his time and techniques. “I’ve gotten eight seconds off of my time in each of the last two years,” Bittinger said. “Right now, he is just on the eight hundred but he is looking forward to next year. I’ll probably be on the 400-meter relay if I’m fast enough.” He previously competed in the mile and in that event he ended up with a personal record of 5:05. Law also praised Bittinger’s performance and said possible points from the sophomore could come in handy in the meet. The coach said he Bittinger runs a good race, he could surprise the field. “Kevin’s the same way, he’s right there time-wise,” Law said. “If he can come out with a decent first lap in the 800 he’s in the finals and he can run in 2:02 he’s going to place also.” Other Redskins who turned in solid performances Friday included Justin Shark, who qualified for regionals in the high jump, John Krebs and Kyle McClintock made the regional meet in the discus. Law said Krebs registered the second best throw in the meet with just over 150 feet. Editor’s note: Full results were not available as of press time. See Monday’s edition for results on the boys and girls and times for the regionals.
