West Nile concerns health officials
By WILLIAM LANEY
Managing Editor
Confirmation of West Nile Virus in the area is concerning to local health officials, an Auglaize County health authority says, but all their advice to area residents is to remain vigilant.
Since West Nile Virus was first detected in the state in 2001, Auglaize County Health Commissioner Charlotte Parsons said county departments have been placed on alert by the state. She is more concerned now with a positive identification in Allen County.
“When we know it is this close, we just try to remind people to try to prevent contact with mosquitoes if at all possible,” Parsons told the Wapakoneta Daily News Friday in a telephone interview. “We don’t conduct any sprayings and I think most of the municipalities that do conduct sprayings are finished for the year.”

Treasurer interviews to begin Friday
By KRISTIN REICHARDT
Assistant Managing Editor
Waynesfield-Goshen Schools Board of Education members plan to begin interviewing candidates Friday for the open treasurer position.
During a special meeting May 21, Superintendent Earnie Jones said school board members reviewed approximately 40 applications submitted to the school and to the Auglaize County Educational Service Center (ESC), and selected six candidates to undergo the first round of interviews.
“I think we’ve got some excellent candidates,” Jones said. “We went through and looked at things, a variety of items that you always look at are experience levels, educational background, other work experiences, that type of thing. We tried to find those we feel will be the best fit for our community.” The candidates scheduled to be interviewed Friday are Nathan E. Counts, of Anna, Kris E. Darr, 1218 Kent Court, St. Marys, Stacy Gratz, 1983 Ohio 385, Waynesfield, Mathew Ketcham, of Belle Center, Peggy Minning, 929 Primrose Drive, Wapakoneta, and Douglas Passet, of Wharton.
“If someone knocks your socks off that might not happen, but typically there will be another round,” Jones said. “On occasion, I’ve been in some interviews where after the first round we started again, but that doesn’t happen that often.”
Treasurer Debbie Pierce said she is pleased with the quality and number of candidates who applied.
“We had a great response,” Pierce said. “We have several applicants who have their Ohio School Treasurer’s license, and several more who have the ability to get that license in a short amount of time. All of them have adequate education and experience for the position.”
Her and Jones’ intention is Friday to narrow the field to two or three candidates. She will then approach board members to make recommendations and set a time frame for subsequent interviews.
