By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor SANDUSKY — Wapakoneta junior Alexander Hager is one win away from a repeat trip to Columbus to compete for a state tennis title. Hager put himself in position to win a district title on Thursday by winning two matches in day one of the district tournament. “Alex really was on today,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Darrell Heintz said. “It was pretty cold in Sandusky today, but he was really making his shots.
Both kids he played got really frustrated because Alex handled them really well.” Playing as a top seed, Hager won his first match over Mike King of Sylvania Southview by scores of 6-1, 6-0. In the district quarterfinals, Hager took on Sandusky’s Travis Steinnemann. Even with the home crowd and home court to his advantage, Steinnemann was no match for Hager. In the first set, Hager blanked Steinnemann 6-0. Hager continued to cruise along as he won the second set by a score of 6-1. “He will now play in the semifinals Saturday in Port Clinton against Ryan Jorgensen of Toledo St. Johns for a trip to the State Tennis Championships,” Heintz said. |
