By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor SIDNEY — In a non-league varsity tennis battle between two squads looking for their 13th win of the season, it was the home team that left the court victorious as Lehman Catholic defeated Wapakoneta by a score of 4-1. With the win, the Cavaliers now sit at 13-4 overall while the Redskins are 12-5. “Lehman is a solid team,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Darrell Heintz said. “They keep the ball in play and don’t make errors. Their first singles probably had more errors than the rest of their team combined.”
At first singles, Wapakoneta junior Alexander Hager earned the lone Redskin victory. He defeated Lehman junior Rob Harrelson 6-1, 6-1. “Alex cruised to an easy win, but the rest of the team struggled,” Heintz said. In second singles action, Cavalier freshman Christian Henderson downed Wapakoneta junior Austin Hunt 6-1, 6-0. At third singles, Lehman sophomore Wade Schrieder took care of Redskin senior Andrew Mammone 6-1, 6-2. In first doubles action, the Cavalier duo of senior Andrew McDonagh and junior Matt Shroyer claimed victory over the Wapakoneta senior duo of Broc Hottle and Derek Mankin 6-0, 6-0. At second doubles, Lehman junior Aaron Stevenson and sophomore Bryan McDonagh downed Wapakoneta senior Ben Carter and junior Jackson Waterman 6-3, 6-3. “They (Cavs) have some good athletes, and they ran down a lot of balls other teams we play don’t,” Heintz said. |
