Campus hires Wright man to be dean
Wednesday, 07 May 2008
Sayer settles into new role
By KAY LOUTH
Staff Writer
CELINA —  He’s been on the job for eight months and since that time, Jim Sayer has made a place for himself in the Wright State University Lake Campus community and the community at large. On Monday, colleagues from both campuses and members of the community converged on the Lake Campus for a welcome party for the new dean.
For Sayer, who has been a part of the university family for more than three decades, he said the best part of the job is the people.
“The people I work with on campus,” Sayer said. “The people I work with in the community. The last eight months is the most fun I’ve had at the university.”
During his eight months as dean of the Lake Campus, Sayer has instituted several new academic degrees and plans are in the works to add more bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He also is overseeing a construction project at the Lake Campus.
“We’re all looking forward to that,” Sayer said. “To get the $9 million construction project going is going to be great. We will also be offering more academics, bachelor’s and master’s degrees that ought to be enough to keep me busy for a while.”
Sayer said he is enthused about the community’s support of the Lake Campus, calling the people of the area “gracious.”
“I greatly appreciate how supportive the people of St. Marys has been,” Sayer said. “No one’s thrown a rock at me or thrown me in the lake, so I figure I’m ahead of the game.”
Earlier in the day, members of the Faculty Senate held a meeting at the Lake Campus and among those attending was university President David R. Hopkins — who praised Sayer for his years of service.
“We are just so pleased he is the dean of the Lake Campus,” Hopkins said. “He has long been important to Wright State in so many ways. He’s just a perfect fit.”
Tom Knapke, who’s been affiliated with the Lake Campus since the 1960s, said he is glad Sayer has come to the Lake Campus.
“He’s outstanding,” Knapke said. “He’s just aware of what’s going on. He’s good at solving problems and issues. They don’t become a crisis — he handles it.”

...I love the "small town" charm and sense of community I feel when I run into my father at Community Market or my Mother-in-Law at Walmart or one of my sisters at the gas station!
