By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor The Wapakoneta varsity boys tennis team ran into one of the best teams in the Western Buckeye League on Wednesday — the Shawnee Indians. The Tribe kept their hold on second place in the league with a 4-1 win over the Redskins. “We are playing much better this week,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Darrell Heintz said. “We had been in a slump and not playing well, but it looks like we are turning things around.”
Wapakoneta’s lone win of the match came at first singles where junior Alexander Hager took down Shawnee freshman Sam Rutter 6-3, 6-0. “Alex did a really nice job of playing his game and not making mistakes,” Heintz said. At second singles, Shawnee (14-3, 7-1) senior Stephen Tucker beat Wapakoneta (10-4, 5-4) junior Austin Hunt 6-3, 6-2. In third singles, Indian junior Shane Grimes downed Redskin senior Andrew Mammone 6-4, 6-2. “Austin and Andrew had good efforts but couldn’t pull out their matches,” Heintz said. At first doubles, Shawnee senior Andrew Weller and sophomore Erich Wade claimed victory over Wapakoneta seniors Broc Hottle and Derek Mankin 6-1, 6-3. “Both doubles teams played really well tonight,” Heintz said. “Broc and Derek had to play one of the best teams in the WBL tonight and they played right with them. “ In second doubles, SHS’s Cody Clark and Adam Dellinger took care of senior Ben Carter and junior Jackson Waterman 6-4, 7-5. “At second doubles, Ben and Jackson only lost their serve twice in the match but that was the difference in a really close match,” Heintz said. |
