Jackson Center pulls out victory
By BRYAN CRAFT
Staff Writer
WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity baseball team played the Jackson Center Tigers close in a 4-3 ballgame after six innings, but gave up too many runs in the top of the seventh.
“We were in the ballgame and I was excited for the seventh, because I think we could have came back and won,” Waynesfield-Goshen varsity coach J.R. Biederman said. “It’s been going that way all year — one big inning — walks and errors. We’ve just got to keep our composure for seven innings and it just hasn’t seemed to happen lately. “I’m a little disappointed, but overall I think we played pretty well,” he said. “It’s just one bad inning.”
Jackson Center (6-12) scored eight runs in the seventh on their way to a 12-3 victory Tuesday night in non-conference action. Waynesfield-Goshen (3-14) could have escaped the last inning with only one runner scoring, after making one out and then having two errors in the field where the defender had the ball in their glove for an out, but lost possession.
“Two weeks ago we played and it was the same way,” Jackson Center varsity coach Gregg Gooding said. “It was the seventh inning and we broke open a close game, again. I expected a tight game because they play well defensively.
“They’re (W-G) playing a lot better,” he said. “Last time we played them it was 2-1 going into the seventh and it ended up 7-1.”
Suffering the loss on the mound for Waynesfield-Goshen was Jimmy Alspaugh, after throwing 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, six walks and a wild pitch.
He allowed four hits with five earned runs. Jake Sandusky threw 2/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks.
He allowed four hits and three earned runs.
Getting the win on the mound for Jackson Center was Trent Mann (2-2) after throwing five innings and striking out nine. He allowed three hits and a earned run.
Tyler Brown started the game and threw for two innings, recording two strikeouts, a walk, and gave up two hits for an earned run with one hit batsman.
The offense for Waynesfield-Goshen was led by Jon Rickle with a single, two runs and a steal.
In addition, Blake Knowlton added a triple and run, Stuart Spencer went 2-for-3 with a double and steal and Ned Burdon had a single and two RBIs.
Jackson Center took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning before Waynesfield-Goshen got a run back in the bottom half of the inning for the 2-1 score. Rickle walked, stole second, moved to third on a single by Spencer and scored on a hit by Burdon.
Jackson Center answered back with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for the 4-1 lead, but Waynesfield-Goshen answered with a run in the bottom of the inning for the 4-2 score. Rickle singled, moved to third on a double by Spencer and scored on an RBI by Burdon.
Waynesfield-Goshen added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 4-3 score.
Knowlton tripled and scored on an error by the shortstop. Next, Jackson Center batted around in the top of the seventh inning, sending 14 batters to the plate and scored eight runs for the 12-3 final.
