By TYLER FACCENDA Staff Writer WAYNESFIELD — A big sixth inning and strong pitching earned the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers a win over Northwest Central Conference foe and perennial power, the Perry Commodores. The Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers’ Stuart Spencer started the sixth inning rally with a single to third. He went to second on a single by Nick Shaner. Spencer was thrown out attempting to steal third base on a pitch to Ron Rupard.
Shaner stole second base on the double steal and took third on a single by Rupard. Jimmy Alspaugh tied the scored at 3-3 when he doubled to left field, scoring Shaner and Rupard. With two outs, Blake Knowlton rapped a single to the outfield, plating Alspaugh for a 4-3 lead. Knowlton went to second on the throw home and stole third. Knowlton scored on wild pitch by the Commodore’s Randy Jarvis. Perry made no noise in the top of the seventh, as the Tigers earned a 5-3 win. Shaner, a sophomore hurler, pitched a complete game for the win, allowing three runs, two earned. Of his 118 pitches, he surrendered eight hits, walked four batters and hit two batsmen. He also struck out six in the game. After the Commodores took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Tigers answered the call. Jake Sandusky scored the first run when he reached second on an error by the Commodore’s shortstop. Sandusky stole third and scored on a single to left by Spencer. After a fielder’s choice by Shaner, Rupard singled to put runners at first and second, but Rupard was doubled off first base on a line drive by Alspaugh. In the second inning, Knowlton launched the ball deep into right field into the “swamp” behind the diamond. After rounding the bases thinking it was a homer, Knowlton was sent back to second as a result of the umpires’ call for a ground-rule double.
