By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor LIMA — In a closely contested battle between two teams with similar records, the Wapakoneta varsity boys tennis team squeaked out a victory over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds.
The Redskins (9-3) won two singles matches and a doubles match for a 3-2 win over the Thunderbirds (8-4). At first singles, Wapakoneta junior Alexander Hager had little trouble with LCC senior Adam Swick, defeating him 6-2, 6-0. “LCC returned Adam Swick (state qualifier last year) to first singles after an injury,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Darrell Heintz said. “Alex had no trouble winning because Adam was pretty rusty. “ In second singles, LCC sophomore Brian Bruin downed Redskin junior Austin Hunt 6-0, 6-1. “The Bruin boy, who had been playing first singles for most of the year, moved down to second and Austin had a hard time staying with him,” Heintz said. At third singles, Wapakoneta junior Jackson Waterman took care of Thunderbird sophomore Jared Klaus 6-0, 7-5. “Jackson dominated the first set, but lost his focus in the second but came back to take the match,” Heintz said. In first doubles, LCC senior Nate McCullough and junior Morgan Drew defeated Redskin seniors Andrew Mammone and Derek Mankin 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. “First doubles had a big lead in the first set tiebreaker but couldn’t pull it out,” Heintz said. At second doubles, the Wapakoneta senior duo of Broc Hottle and Ben Carter beat Thunderbird sophomore Andrew Frantart and freshman Mark Schoenhofer 6-3, 6-3. “Second doubles were the last ones on and the weather was getting bad,” Heintz said. “The wind came up in the second set and the temperature dropped about 15 degrees, but Ben and Broc came through to give us the win.” |
