South Westminster Street renovation still slated for June completion By KRISTIN REICHARDT Assistant Managing Editor WAYNESFIELD — Construction on the main north-south thoroughfare of an eastern Auglaize County village remains on schedule for completion, the project manager says, only hitting a few minor glitches. Bryce Schmitmeyer, of the civil engineering division of Fanning-Howey Associates Inc., in Celina, approached Waynesfield village councilors during their regular meeting Monday with the South Westminster Street reconstruction project’s first payment request.
He also provided an update on the project’s progress, with which he said he is pleased. “Things are moving along pretty nicely,” Schmitmeyer said. “We’re looking to be on schedule to complete this by the end of June.” The project includes repaving the street and installing curbs and sidewalks, as well as installing infrastructure such as stormwater, water and sanitary sewer lines. Crews for general contractor AnderzackPitzen Construction, of Metamora, completed installation of the main water line Monday, and water service for those properties affected is to be switched after all of the existing systems are tied in to the new line. Schmitmeyer said he expects crews to complete construction of the underground utilities in the next two weeks. After that, they should begin excavating to build and pave the road, followed by installing curbs and sidewalks. Construction crews did encounter unexpected existing concrete that will cause an extra cost, but Schmitmeyer said areas where the project has come in below the estimated $800,000 budget should offset this cost. He said no funds will come from village coffers for the first payment of the $682,783 cost to AnderzackPitzen. Of the $160,151.44 pay application, $60,000 is to be paid by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered through Auglaize County Commissioners, and the remainder is to be paid by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant. “I think the project is going along very well,” Mayor Mike Ridenour said during Monday’s meeting. “I have heard very few complaints for the amount of work we are doing.” Councilor Diana Dulebohn said she heard some minor complaints from residents who struggled to access their driveways due to construction, while other councilors said they received positive feedback “I have only heard compliments to the construction company,” Councilor Ronda Knox said. Village Administrator Ron Zimmerman expressed emphatic approval of the project’s progress. “We couldn’t have picked a better contractor if we had drawn one up ourselves,” Zimmerman said of the construction company crews’ courtesy and work ethic. “We’re getting our money’s worth on this project.” |
