By TYLER FACCENDA Staff Writer LAFAYETTE — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers bats failed to heat up against the Allen East Mustangs despite warmer temperatures for Monday’s contest. The Tigers used two pitchers in the 5-2 loss to the Mustangs. Tiger Jimmy Alspaugh started the game, pitching two innings, alling three hits and one earned run. Tiger Cody Sackinger took over in the third nning, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out seven Mustangs on the day.
Tigers Jake Sandusky and Blake Knowlton led the offensive charge against the Mustangs. Sandusky scored the first run for the Tigers in the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, Sandusky stepped up to the plate. He hit the first pitch, hitting the ball deep into left field for a single. Nick Shaner struck out and Stuart Spencer hit a towering infield fly to second base for the second out. Sackinger stepped up to the plate and hit a single on a 3-1 count, plating Sandusky for an RBI and the Tigers’ first run of the inning. Knowlton scored in the fifth after hitting a triple. After Alspaugh hit an infield fly to the shortstop for the first out to the Tigers, Knowlton stepped up to the plate. Staring down the pitcher for his first pitch, Knowlton swung the bat and launched a deep hit into center field for a triple. Jarvis took to the batter’s box afterwards, cracking the ball back to the pitcher, who fumbled it and allowed Jarvis to take to first and letting Knowlton cross the plate for the second run. The Tigers stymied the Mustangs in the first inning with an unusual double play. With a runner on first base, the Mustang batter hit a liner to center field where Knowlton picked the ball up, threw to second for one out and first for the second out to turn the lone double play of the game. Unable to clear a 3-run deficit, the Tigers were faced with a defeat against the Allen East Mustangs in a non-league match-up.
