Tigers coast to win

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity baseball team played strong defense behind a solid all-around game from Nick Shaner Monday night in a Northwest Central Conference matchup against the Ridgemont Golden Gophers.
“They played solid defense, they had good pitching and the bats showed up tonight,” Waynesfield-Goshen varsity coach J.R. Biederman said. “Put all three of those together and we’re going to be a pretty hard ball club to beat.”
Shaner (2-2) pitched five innings of work with seven strikeouts and two walks. He allowed four hits and one run while hitting two batters in a 15-1 run-rule victory.
“I was throwing strikes, and when they did hit it our defense backed me up and fielded it,” Shaner said.
At the plate he went 4-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs, two runs and a steal.
“Nick Shaner stood out to me,” Biederman said. “He’s turning out to be one valuable asset to this ball club as far as his pitching ability and his bat. He comes up to the plate with big hits.
Waynesfield-Goshen (2-6, 2-1 NWCC) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but scored two runs in the bottom half and never trailed again. “When a team scores, you’ve got to keep coming at them and not let up,” Shaner said.
The Tigers batted around in the third and fourth innings, sending 12 and 11 batters to the plate, respectively. They scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning for the 10-1 lead and added five runs in the fourth for the win.
“When our hits are coming, we all catch fire and it really picks us up for the rest of the game and the game after that,” Shaner said.
Others on offense for Waynesfield-Goshen was Jake Sandusky, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and a steal. Jimmy Alspaugh contributed with a single, two RBIs and a run and Stuart Spencer had a single, RBI, run and steal.
Also contributing behind the plate for the Tigers were Jamie Horn with two singles, two RBIs, two runs and a steal, as well as Jon Rickle with a run, RBI and steal. In addition, Curtis Shaner added a single, two runs, a RBI and steal while Isaac Gray had two runs and a single.
The eight runs scored in the third inning started off with a Nick Shaner single to left field. Next, Spencer was hit by a pitch. The two completed a double steal and both scored on a single by Horn, who went to second on the throw to the plate. He scored on an error by the third baseman.
Next, Blake Knowlton walked and moved to third when Rickle reached on an error, eventually scoring on a passed ball. Curtis Shaner and Gray both walked to load the bases.
Rickle scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Sandusky and Curtis Shaner tagged up and moved to third. He would score on an error at first base, while Alspaugh reached on the error.
Both Curtis Shaner and Alspaugh would score on a triple by Nick Shaner.
