By PHIL MCLEAN Staff Writer BELLEFONTAINE — One run proved to be the difference as the Wapakoneta Redskins swept the Bellefontaine Chieftains in a doubleheader Saturday. The Redskins took the first game 4-3 behind a strong pitching performance by freshman pitcher Kelsey Place, only to watch Amy Copeland and Acacia Truesdale limit the Chieftains to one run in a 2-1 win. The doubleheader sweep improves the Redskins record to 11-1 under varsity softball coach Bill Sammons. Place went the distance in a complete game win in the opener. The freshman hurler gave up three earned runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Tara Place went 3-for-4 in the game and scoring once. Senior Abby Snider collected two hits in going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one stolen base. Truesdale worked the first five innings for the win in the second game, surrendering one hit and striking out six Chieftain batters. Copeland pitched the last two innings, allowing one run on one hit. Snider went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run, while Ashley Lucas had one hit and one RBI. Erica Bryan collected two hits on the afternoon, and Sierra Vondenhuvel recorded two steals. Wapakoneta returns to action Tuesday, when the Redskins, 3-1 in the conference, travel up the road for a Western Buckeye League game with the Shawnee Indians at 5 p.m.
