(Staff photo/ Bryan Craft) Wapak boasts 50 members on squad By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Editor Numbers are the one thing that excited Wapakoneta Redskins varsity track coach Mark Law for the current 2007 season. “Our strength — probably our numbers,” Law said. “It seemed like in the last couple of years we had to four-event all our good guys just to try and get some points. Now we’re pretty solid and spread out.”
With 50 members on this year’s team he should be excited. “We don’t have any outstanding guys, but we’re pretty solid and we’re pretty deep,” Law said. “This is the deepest we’ve been since the five years I’ve been doing this. Our junior and sophomore classes are pretty big. We only have five seniors.” Law returns two four-year letter winners in Justin Shark and T.C. Erb. His two biggest losses from last year’s team are Cody McClintock in the discus and Alex Borges in the 200-meter dash. Law would like a top three finish in the Western Buckeye League and said success in the league meet is the highest goal. He expects Ottawa-Glandorf, Defiance and Shawnee to be the top teams in the league. Shark will compete in the high jump and possibly in the 200 dash and 800 relay. The field events could be strong this season with senior Jon Krebs and junior Kyle McClintock in the shot put and discus. McClintock will also compete in the high jump and the 400 relay. “Kyle McClintock — he’s probably our only four event guy, because three of his events are field events,” Law said. “I would predict that he most likely is going to place in the shot and disc, both, and even maybe slide in at the high jump. He’s jumping at 5-feet-10 right now, so he’s got a chance if he keeps improving at his high jump. “Overall our shot and disc is going to be really strong with Kyle and Jon, both,” Law said. “I think every meet we go to, those guys should place in both shot and disc. That’s some big points right there. To get two places in each event, that’s huge.” Also a strong field event participant is junior Brad Steinke in the pole vault, while sophomore Jason Bartlett will be in the long jump and 100 dash. Steinke could also partake in the 1,600 relay. Junior Zac Lauck will also compete in the long jump as will sophomore Dan Dripps. Lauck could see some time in the 100 dash and 400 relay, while Dripps may be in the 100 and 200 dash, as well as the 800 relay. Some of the distance events will be covered by sophomore Brady Prater, senior Brian Bailey and sophomore Kevin Bittinger. Prater should run in the 1,600 and 3,200, while Bittinger will participate in the 800 and 3,200 relay. Bailey will compete in the 800 and 3,200 relay. Other events covered include the 300 and 110 hurdles by sophomore Kenneth Long and the 200 dash and 800 relay by junior Mitch Oen. A promising newcomer could be Drew Erb. |
