The Wapakoneta YMCA Wahoos Swimming Team celebrated the end of their season Saturday with a banquet that honored members’ accomplishments throughout the season. Two things stood out from the recently completed season — the team won the Division II title in the Northwest Ohio Swim League March 10-11, and the 11-12 year boys who attended the Great Lakes Zone competition March 17-18 at Ohio State University won that age division with points earned from individual and relay events.
Head Coach Mark Cadle presented the plaque denoting the accomplishment to the quartet of Zachary Dickman, twins Garrett and Zachary Diltz and Matthew Wilcox. The zone meet, a time-qualifying event, pits swimmers from Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan and Indiana against each other in the 2-day event. The Wahoos sent 21 swimmers to the event, a record number, according to Cadle. Swimmers participating in the zone event included Lexis Braun, Amanda Cadle, Chelsea Cadle, Drew Davis, Zachary Dickman, Garrett Diltz, Zachary Diltz, Nate Hager, Mitchell Herold, Courtney Hunter, Andrew Jensen, Royce Kantner, Hayden Metzger, Josh Ralston, Heather Ruck, Jacob Ruck, Wesley Ruedebusch, Joshua Vondran, Veronica Wende, Matthew Wilcox and Mitchell Wilcox. The banquet Saturday recognized the swim team members who earned improvements throughout the course of the season, including one swimmer who reached the 100-improvement mark. Hayden Metzger, 9, was presented a banner honoring that achievement. Those swimmers who arrive at 25 improvements earn a patch, at 50 improvements they receive a polo shirt, and at 75 improvements a warm-up suit.
