By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer In a preseason interview, Wapakoneta varsity softball coach Bill Sammons lamented the fact that Wapakoneta had not be able to get on its field for practices. Conditions had just made practices impossible. On Monday the Redskins opened the 2007 softball season with a non-league game against Benjamin Logan and it didn’t appear that the lack of practice on the field was even a minor inconvienence.
fter plating the game’s first run in the home half of the first inning, Wapakoneta batted around in the second, scoring five runs on its way to an 8-1 victory. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” Sammons said. He noted that the Redskins started out a bit tentative. Abby Snider reached base with two outs in the first inning, on a fielding error by the Raiders third baseman. Snider stole second and scored on Christy Steinke’s RBI single. Acacia Truesdale was the complete game winner, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out eight. Wapakoneta sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning. Megan Wegesin singled. Amy Copeland reached on a fielder’s choice. Stephanie Grimes walked and Jordyn Bodell was sent in to pinch run. The Raiders starting pitcher Monica Piedel, who suffered the loss, delivered a run-producing walk to Tara Place. Erica Bryan reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Copeland. Piedel got Snider to left field for the second out of the inning. Then Steinke got her second hit of the game, a three-run double. The game settled into a pitchers’ duel for the next three innings. Wapakoneta got its final two runs in the fifth. With one out Sierra Vondenhuevel singled and Wegesin drew a walk. Copeland grounded back to the mound, but back-to-back singles by Grimes and Place plated Wapakoneta’s final runs. “We would like to get a least one run in every inning,” Sammons said. Ben Logan’s lone marker came in the visitor’s seventh when Chelsey Ramsey collected her second hit of the game. She went to second on an error and scored on a wild pitch. “We hit the ball well,” Sammons said. Wapakoneta recorded 9 hits in the game, including Steinke’s double. Benjamin Logan used two pitchers in the game. Piedel gave up six runs on four hits. Anne Brooks came on in relief in the fourth inning, giving up two runs and six hits. The two pitchers combined for only one Wapakoneta strikeout. Monday’s game was the first of seven home games Wapakoneta has to start the season. The Redskins return to action tonight when they host Lima Senior. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. |
