By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor DEFIANCE — The Wapakoneta varsity wrestling team turned in an impressive performance against several Western Buckeye League foes during a five-team meet held at Defiance High School on Thursday. The Redskins fought their way to a first-place finish by going a perfect 4-0 against their WBL brothers. “I am starting to see things coming around,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Rostorfer said. “If you look back to how we wrestled at the Findlay Duals and compare it to how we wrestled tonight, there is much improvement. This improvement is due to this team’s work ethic and attitude.
“We have all set goals and are working to meet those goals.” Placing behind Wapakoneta were Defiance (3-1), St. Marys (2-2), Ottawa-Glandorf (1-3) and Bath (0-4). The Redskins’ defeated O-G (58-24), Bath (48-24), St. Marys (52-18) and Defiance (44-30). Going undefeated for Wapakoneta were Nathan Conaway (103-pound weight class), Tyler Shipp (171) and Logan Erb (215). “They wrestled well, and I am proud of them,” Rostorfer said. Winning 3-of-4 matches for the Redskins were Caden Mauk (130), Lucas Poppe (140) and Tyler Matte (189). Claiming victories in 2-of-3 matches for Wapakoneta were Jake Beemer (112), Mitchell Beemer (135), Jon Carpenter (145) and Brad Fleck (285). The Redskins are back in action today at 10 a.m. as they travel to Logan County to compete in the Ben Logan Invitational.
