Kantner sets another Wapak record

NAPOLEON — The Wapakoneta varsity boys and girls swim teams didn’t finish first in the Napoleon Invitational on Saturday, but the Redskins did have strong showings on both sides as yet another school record came tumbling down in the process.
Freshman swimming sensation Royce Kantner, who set a school record on Thursday in the 100 butterfly, broke the program’s record in the 500 freestyle on Saturday.
“Royce swam that race with a lot of power and endurance,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Angela Wourms said. “It was  a fun one to watch. The  previous record was set by Seth Fahncke (graduated  last year) in the 2005-06 season. From a team perspective, the Wapakoneta girls squad turned in a top-five performance, finishing fourth with 124 points. Winning the 14-team invitational was Napoleon with 349 points. Finishing ahead of Wapakoneta was Celina (220) and Ottawa-Glandorf (181).
“Overall, I am very excited about how the girls finished fourth overall,” Wourms said. “Throughout the duration of the meet, coach Kelli Powers and I were able to spot some areas we need to address, such as flipturns, and we plan to implement some drills that are specific to those things to help everyone improve.”
Finishing in the top four for the girls squad were the 200 medley relay team comprised of Courtney Hunter, Madison Ruedebusch, Heather Ruck and Kelsey Borgert (fourth, 2:04.04), Ruedebusch (fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.93; fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.71), Chelsea Lucas (first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 227.40) and Hunter (third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.46). “We didn’t have as many personal bests as I had anticipated, but I was satisfied with our ability to compete when we were close with another team. Our kids have big hearts and will ‘go get ‘em,’” Wourms said.
On the boys side, Napoleon won the invitational with 469 points while Wapakoneta finished sixth with 88 points.
Placing ahead of the Redskins were O-G (196), Celina (190), Van Wert (140) and Bryan (100).
Kantner was the lone swimmer from the Wapakoneta boys swim team to place fourth or higher.
He was first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.89 and third in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:19.94.
Wapakoneta hosts a home meet at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
