Tigers fall to Perry

LIMA – Facing off in the second game of the Northwest Central Conference Tip-off Classic, the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity boys basketball team faced off against the host school, the Perry Commodores.
Holding their own throughout the first quarter, the Tigers were overpowered by the quickness of the Perry team, and lost to the Commodores with a score of 55-47.
“Our kids did a good job with the zone and we limited them to one shot,” Waynesfield-Goshen varsity coach Doug Foley said. “We had a little run there in the second quarter, and we turned the ball a couple times in the press.”
The leading scorer for the Tigers was Adam Foley, who brought in a game-high of 13 points. Foley was 3-of-5 from inside the arc, 2-of-4 from beyond the 3-point line, and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe.
Jake Spencer and Taylor Miller, who brought in 9 points each, were right behind Foley in scoring. Also scoring for the Tigers were Stuart Spencer with 8 points, Christian Lament with 6 points, Keaton Fetter with 3 points and Travis Mullins with 2 points.
There were two lead scorers for Perry, with Devonaire Johnson and Brandon Riepenhoff each scoring 12 points for their team.
The game was plagued with fouling throughout. The Tigers had 19 fouls and two players fouled out, and the Commodores had 18 team fouls. Foley was taken out of the game due to fouls with just four minutes left, whereas his teammate J. Spencer was taken out with 2 minutes left.
”When those two guys fouled out, we got pressured offensively,” Foley said. In the opening minutes of the game, the first shot was hit from the 3-point line for the Tigers off the hand of Miller. Following up very quickly was Stuart with a 2-pointer to get the Tigers out on an early lead.
Perry showed that it would not let these points go unanswered, and hit a 2-pointer followed by a 3-pointer to tie things up.
The Tigers went on a 5-0 run to bite back, with Stuart hitting a basket for 2, after which he was fouled and hit a free throw, and then Foley stepped up and sunk the ball for 2 points of his own.
Battling back and forth through the first quarter, both teams were sitting at a tie at 14 points.
The second quarter is when Perry really put on the heat.
Due to their quick play and fast offense, the Commodores outscored the Tigers by sinking 10 points, compared to the 3 points of the Tigers.
The score at halftime was 24-17, with Perry in the lead.
Waynesfield-Goshen was not to be counted out, however. They came out in the second half and really poured on some heat of their own.
“Our kids said enough was enough,” Foley said. “We were down 16 points, and we got aggressive, and then it was a ballgame.”
At the beginning of the quarter, after Perry had scored 3 3-pointers in a row, the Tigers said enough was enough. Following this, the Tigers scored 13 points, answered only by 3 from the Commodores.
During the final minutes of the third quarter, the Tigers went on a 9-0, all done by Foley. He hit 2 3-pointers, followed by a 2-pointer. Then he was fouled and made the extra basket from the foul line.
The fourth quarter saw more scoring than the rest of the game. The Tigers outscored the Commodores by one point, 16-15. Waynesfield-Goshen had a run midway through the quarter, pouncing on late-game opportunities and striking fast.
Miller hit a 2-pointer, followed by another and a foul shot from Jake. This really got the motivation going, until the fouls starting happening on a frequent basis.
After Foley fouled out, the Tigers were starting to battle uphill, and then they lost Jake to foul-outs as well.
In the end, the Commodores rose victorious over the Tigers, due in large part to the amount of free throws taken at their end of the court.
The Tigers will open league play this Friday when they host Temple Christian.
