By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Editor LIMA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity wrestling team pinned the Shawnee Indians Thursday night, 38-31. “We wrestled solid and we got some big wins,” Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Rostorfer said. “Giving up 18 points, you never are going to have an easy dual match. We’ll take the win definitely and use that for some momentum next Saturday at the league tournament.” The league tournament is at 10 a.m. Feb. 10 at Shawnee. The night started out in the 171-pound weight class where Wapakoneta’s Tyler Shipp was leading 11-2 against Shawnee’s Chad Downard, before pinning him with 21.6 seconds left in the second period. This gave the Redskins the 6-0 lead.
Wapakoneta voided the next two matches for a 12-6 score. In the heavyweight division, the Redskins’ Adam Byrne won a 3-2 decision over the Indians’ Derek Geiger for a 12-9 score. The Redskins’ Tyler Kennedy won a 16-7 major decision over Shawnee’s Ryan Parsons in the 103-pound weight class for a 13-12 Wapakoneta lead. The Redskins voided 112 for an 18-13 Shawnee lead. Wapakoneta’s Tanner Zwiebel was pinned with 1:19 left in the third period in the 119-pound class by Shawnee’s Justin Thomas to give the Indians a 24-13 lead. Next, the Redskins’ Brian Bailey won a 21-6 technical fall against Shawnee’s Ryan Nichols in the 125-pound weight class for a 24-18 score. Wapakoneta tied the score up at 24 when Mitchell Beemer pinned Shawnee’s Zach Miron in the 130-pound weight class. In the 135-pound weight class, the Redskins’ Joel Claybaugh won a 15-0 technical fall over Shawnee’s Johnny Pelligrini for a 29-24 Redskin lead. This was followed by Wapakoneta’s Lucas Poppe losing a 7-0 decision to Shawnee’s Ryan Rider in the 140-pound weight class for a 29-27 score. Corey Bailey, of Wapakoneta, pinned the Indians’ Jay Carter with 21.6 seconds in the second period of the 145-pound weight class for a 35-27 score. Shawnee’s Kyler Washam won a 19-6 major decision over the Redskins’ Tyler Matte in the 152-pound weight class for a 35-31 score. Wapakoneta’s Kenneth Long, wrestling at 160 pounds, wrapped up the match by winning a 19-13 decision against the Indians’ Justin Coon for the 38-31 final.
