By JOSHUA KEERAN Sports Editor Despite having just one returning varsity golfer from the 2006 squad, the Wapakoneta boys golf team finished this year with a very respectable 6-6 record. In fact, Redskin varsity coach Kenny Wayman themed this season’s end of the year banquet “Respectable Season.” “Everything we did in practice, work ethic, playing in matches and tournaments was respectable,” he said. “I was pleased and happy with how the players performed this season. “Coming into the season I really didn’t know what to expect because I had only one varsity player returning, senior Kyle Maus. In other words, I had a lot of inexperienced players playing at the varsity level.” Wayman said the beginning of the season served as a transition period for his inexperienced squad, most of which had only played jayvee golf prior to this year.
“The level of competition is more demanding and more competitive than at the JV level,” he said. “It takes a lot of commitment to do well when you play at the varsity level. I would say we were getting there as the season progressed and everyone improved throughout the season. “Of course, we had our down moments (losing a couple of matches at home) and our high moments (winning on the road and winning at home). “In tournament play, we were respectable given that most tournaments we played were at the beginning of the year. We competed against some very good golf teams and we kept it respectable.” During the awards banquet held last month, Maus was honored with the lowest average award (38 for the year) and was awarded a four-year varsity letter. Maus was also named first-team All-WBL, honorable mention All-Northwest District and academic All-Ohio. Taking home the most improved player award was junior Kyle West, who averaged 50 last season, but improved that average to 43 in 2007. West was also awarded with a first-year varsity letter. Other Redskins awarded with their first-year varsity letters were senior Tyler Sosby, senior Nick Caspar, senior Brian Henkener, senior Mike Fisher and freshman Phil Gabel. “Overall, we finished the season with a 4-5 record in the WBL and 2-1 in non-league action,” Wayman said. “We finished sixth overall in the WBL and our goal was to finish in the top half (we were close). “As long as this team continues to play and work in the offseason, we should be just fine next year.” |
