Two boys, one girl place 1st at Ottawa swim meet |

 By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Editor The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity swim team competed at Ottawa Jan. 22 with two boys finishing first in two events and one girl placing first in her respective event. Taking first for the Redskins were Brady Prater in the 200 individual medley (2:18.03) and 100 backstroke (1:06.15), Brett Latham in the 50 freestyle (25.55) and 100 freestyle (58.15). Freshman Madison Ruedebusch took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.46) in a meet against the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Seth Fahncke, Prater, Latham and Matt Lawrence finished first in a time of 1:44.46.
“Although we didn’t see too many time drops the Wapak swimmers did many things right — we hit our turns, we finished with our heads down, and we competed well,” Wapakoneta coach Angie Harting told the Wapakoneta Daily News. “With not as many swimmers, O-G was able to come out on top, but we didn’t let ourselves get down. We have reflected on the meet and what needs to change going into our last home meet and the end of the year.” The team will compete at the Western Buckeye League meet Saturday at the Lima YMCA. Brady Prater is seeded second for WBL in the 200 individual medley. Kevin Knight is seeded fourth for WBL in the 100 butterfly. Fahncke is seeded first for the WBL in the 100 freestyle, while Prater is seeded second. Individuals placing second for the Redskins include Fahncke in the 200 freestyle (2:03.56) and 100 backstroke (1:09.19), Alexis Salsbury in the 500 freestyle (6:57.92) and Lawrence in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.88). The 200 medley relay team of Ruedebusch, Kelsey Borgert, Breanna Borgert and Kayla Prater finished second with a time of 2:12.31. The boys 400 freestyle relay team of Brady Prater, Shane Slechter, Fahncke and Lawrence also placed second with a time of 3:54.15. Taking third place were Salsbury in the 200 individual medley (2:47.37), Ruedebusch in the 100 butterfly (1:13.07), Breanna Borgert in the 100 freestyle (1:05.66), Slechter in the 100 freestyle (1:00.93), Kayla Prater in the 100 backstroke (1:20.02) and Kelsey Borgert in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.53). The girls 200 medley relay team of Kaysi Lyall, Katie Krock, Megan Scott and Alyssa Stiger finished third with a time of 2:19.94. The girls 400 freestyle relay team of Stiger, Scott, Salsbury and Kayla Prater finished third in a time of 4:45.03. Finishing fourth were Scott in the 50 freestyle (30.59), Kelsey Borgert in the 100 butterfly (1:18.40), Stiger in the 500 freestyle (7:10.00) and Slechter in the 100 backstroke (1:11.66). Placing fifth were Amber Valenti in the 200 freestyle (2:44.75), Kaitlyn Kantner in the 200 individual medley (3:05.04), Stiger in the 50 freestyle (31.97), Krock in the 100 freestyle (1:09.15) and Scott in the 100 backstroke (1:22.37). The girls 200 medley relay team of Valenti, Shelby Fisher, Kaitlyn Kantner and Hillary Kinstle finished fifth with a time of 2:33.69. The girls 400 freestyle relay team of Kaitlyn Kantner, Kinstle, Fisher and Valenti took fifth with a time of 5:01.03. Ending in sixth place were Fisher in the 200 freestyle (2:45.31) and 50 freestyle (33.16), Lyall in the 100 butterfly (1:26.50) and 100 backstroke (1:25.68), Prater in the 100 freestyle (1:09.84), Kinstle in the 500 freestyle (7:33.09) and Krock in the 100 breaststroke (1:27.65). Harting said several swimmers bettered their times as shown Monday at Ottawa, including 3 seconds by Fisher in the 200 freestyle and 5 seconds by Latham. |
