By TYLER FACCENDA Staff Writer NEW BREMEN — Unable to stop a massive run early in the first quarter, the Botkins Trojans girls varsity basketball team was doomed in a non-league match up Saturday afternoon. Their opponents — the New Bremen Cardinals — went on a 12-point run from which the Trojans were unable to compensate for the duration of the game, ending in a 56-24 loss. “The game was lopsided from the start,” Botkins coach Tom Platfoot said after the match. “New Bremen was 8-of-10 in the first quarter from the field, they were 8-of-12 in the second, so any team that is going to shoot 75 percent from the field is obviously going to have the upper hand. “Along with our 15 turnovers in the first half put us down at about 20 (points) in the first half,” the Trojan coach said. “From there on, I did a lot of substitution in the second half, but you’ve just got to put games like this behind you and move on.”
Alisha Grieves, the Trojans 5-foot-9 senior, led the team in scoring, scoring 8 points. Grieves was 4-of-6, or 66 percent, from the field. She missed her two free-throw shots. Nichele Powell scored 7 points — including the team’s only 3-pointer. Christie Fullenkamp with 4 points, Kristen George and Jessica Luthman with 2 points each, and Kristen Altstaetter with 1 point rounded out the Trojans scoring. New Bremen fielded three players in double digits in scoring. Jaclyn Dabbelt led the Cardinals’ offense with the game-high of 13 points, followed by Christine Schwartz and Stacy Timmerman with 10 points apiece. Rounding out the Cardinals were LeAnn Topp with 8 points, Stephanie Winner with 6 points, Michelle Griesdorn with 4 points, Melissa Bruggeman with 3 points, and Bethany Webster with 2 points. After Grieves of Botkins gained possession of ball for her team in the opening tip-off, the Cardinals stole the ball from Trojans and got the ball to Schwartz to score the first shot of the game. After the bucket, the Trojans Powell answered with a huge 3-pointer, which gave the Trojans a short-lived lead situation, when the Cardinals decided to follow up on this shot with a 12-point run that effectively sealed the game this early on. Three minutes into the contest, Schwartz and Timmerman accounted for all 14 points as the Cardinals jumped to a 14-3 lead. Schwartz has six of the team’s 14 points, while Timmerman scored 8 points during the run. Grieves hit a bucket with just a minute left in the first period to stop the run but the Cardinals hit two shots to take an 18-5 lead after the first period. In the second period, the Cardinals scored 19 points, but the Trojans were not going down without a fight as they hit for 10 points in the period. Botkins made 9-of-45 shots, or 20 percent, from the field, with 8-of-35, or 23 percent, from inside the paint. The Trojans were 5-of-8, or 63 percent, from the charity stripe. New Bremen made 24-of-55 shots, or 44 percent, from the field, with 3-of-10, or 30 percent, being drained from the 3-point line. From the free throw line, the Cardinals were 5-of-9, or 55 percent. |
