Wapakoneta Redskin varsity wrestler Lucas Poppe tries to take down the Van Wert Cougar opponent Thursday in a dual match at the high school. (Staff photo/ Bryan Craft) By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Editor The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity wrestling team were solid in five matches, but could not overcome its struggles in the other weight classes and three voids against the Van Wert Cougars. Tyler Kennedy (103) and Mitchell Beemer (130), Corey Bailey (145), Tyler Shipp (171) and Adam Byrne (275) picked up wins in Thursday night’s 49-25 loss to the Van Wert Cougars. “Looking at the positives we had the five guys win,” Wapakoneta coach Jason Rostorfer said. “We had three pins, a major decision and a decision, but when you only win four matches, that isn’t going to cut it.
“We’ll just have to keep working and chipping away,” he added. “It’s toward the end of the season, so we’ve got to get things ironed out here pretty quick.” The night started in the 135-pound weight class where the Redskins’ Lucas Poppe suffered a 12-2 major decision loss to Van Wert’s Chris Heath for a 4-0 score. Next, Wapakoneta’s Joel Claybaugh, wrestling in the 140-pound division, went down 7-5 in overtime for a 7-0 Cougar lead. The Redskins’ Corey Bailey, wrestling in 145 pounds, got the team back on track with a 3-1 decision against the Cougars’ Brad Dettrow for a 7-3 score. Wapakoneta’s Tyler Matte, a 152-pound wrestler, was pinned with 26 seconds left in the first period by Van Wert’s Craig Hirschy for a 13-3 score. This was followed by the Redskins’ Kenneth Long, wrestling at 160 pounds, being pinned by Van Wert’s Matt Noggle at 1:04 in the second period for a 19-3 score. Tyler Shipp helped close the gap for the Redskins by winning a 15-7 major decision against the Cougars’ Ben Roop in the 171-pound weight class. The Redskins trailed, 19-7. Wapakoneta voided the 189- and 215-pound weight classes for a 31-7 score. Next, the Redskins’ Tyler Kennedy pinned Van Wert’s Dillan Foust at 1:06 in the second period of the 103-pound weight class for a 31-19 score. Wapakoneta voided the 112-pound weight class for a 37-19 score. The Redskins’ Tanner Zwiebel was pinned by Van Wert’s Gyer Blackmore at 1:24 of the second period of the 119-pound weight division for a 43-19 count. Wapakoneta’s Brian Bailey, wrestling at 125, was pinned by Van Wert’s Nick Sully with 1:18 remaining in the third period for a 49-19 score. Wapakoneta ended the night on an upbeat with Mitchell Beemer pinning the Cougars’ Brian Voisard Jr. with 1:22 in the first period of the 130-pound class to conclude the scoring on the night at 49-25.
