By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer When the 2006-07 season started, the Wapakoneta Redskins routinely had three or four players scoring in double figures. Then the Redskins went through a period of time when they only had one or two players score in double digits.
Wapakoneta returned to its early season form when four players scored in double digits for varsity coach Brad Rex as the Redskins dominated Kenton, 72-44, in Western Buckeye League girls basketball action. Freshman Heidi Schlegel, sophomore Devon Golden and seniors Lindsey Kentner and Brittany Duff combined for 54 of Wapakoneta’s 72 points in the Redskins seventh win in the WBL. The win maintains a one-game lead for Wapakoneta over the Defiance Bulldogs and the Bath Wildcats. “It was a good win for us,” Rex said. “But we saw some things we need to work on. “It was another team win for us,” Rex added about his squad which needs wins over Bath and the Elida Bulldogs to win the WBL title. Wapakoneta jumped out to a 21-4 first period lead and never looked back. “Wapakoneta did what it had to do,” Kenton coach Nancy Baum said. Against the Kenton Wildcats, nine Redskin players contributed to the win with Golden and Schlegel sharing team-high scoring honors with 15 points each. Kentner scored 14 points and Duff hit for 10 points to help the Redskins improve their overall record to 13-2. Golden hit three 3-pointers on the night, with Kentner, Duff and Jenna Steveley hitting two each from beyond the arc. Schlegel scored on six field goals and three free throws, while Abby Harrod hit two buckets and made a free throw to give the Redskins balance from the paint. “We’ve got a lot of good players,” Rex said. While Baum could be seen visibly frustrated at times during Thursday’s game, she said she was pleased with the play of senior Anne Derr. “Anne did a nice job for us,” Baum said of the game’s leading scorer. Derr finished the game with 21 points. Brittany Sheets scored 8 points on the night and Angela Fackler hit for 6 points for the Wildcats. Kenton falls to 0-7 in the WBL and 3-12 on the season overall. Kenton never recovered from the 17-point gap in the first period, falling behind 39-15 at the half and watching the Redskins build a 56-25 lead at the third period. Rex and his girls can savor the win over the weekend, but they end up playing the Carlee Roethlisberger-led Findlay Trojans in a non-league game Monday at Findlay. In Western Buckeye League action, the Shawnee Indians defeated the St. Marys Roughriders, 55-32, while Bath outpaced the Celina Bulldogs, 56-39. Defiance continued to keep pace with the Redskins with a 61-39 victory over Elida, while the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans kept their WBL title hopes alive with a 44-38 win over the Van Wert Cougars. The Redskin junior varsity ran away from the Wildcat reserves 46-8. The Wapakoneta defense limited its hosts to 2 points in the first half, as the Redskin junior varsity improved to 11-4 on the season. |
