By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer The Wapakoneta volleyball team gave home fans something to cheer about in its Western Buckeye League game with Bath Thursday night. Unfortunately, as has happened so often this year, the cheers were muted by the final outcome of the game. The Redskins lost their final regular season match to the Wildcats, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19. The loss drops Wapakoneta to an 0-9 WBL record and the Redskins end the regular season with a 1-21 mark. Still there were positives in the match. Wapakoneta threw a scare into Bath when the Redskins rebounded from a two-game deficit to take the third game of the match. The game was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands six times. Wapakoneta got the lead for the last time when Kelsey Borgert served five straight points, forcing a Bath timeout with the Redskin up 23-22.
The Wildcats got a sideout point to tie the game, then Jordan Bodell served Wapakoneta to the win. Bath responded with a vengeance in the four game and put the match on ice. “We got to some balls we probably shouldn’t have,” the Wapakoneta coaching staff said, as they looked for positives for the night. In game one, Bath built a small lead, but couldn’t post a lead they were comfortable with. At the end of the first rotation, the Wildcats only held a 13-11 lead. The game was tied twice and the lead changed hands twice in the second rotation. Sheila Hahn knotted the score at 15 on her serve and Andrea Stauffer gave Wapakoneta the lead 18-17, but then Bath’s Alex Dackin stepped up and got eight points to take the first game. In game two, it was Erika Dickerson who did in the Redskins, getting 13 points before losing serve with the Wildcats ahead a 24-6. Taylor Claybaugh got six points, but couldn’t hold serve. Bath held off the Redskins in the final game of the night even though Wapakoneta trailed but only four points, before Wildcat Rachel Dackin served out. The win improves Bath’s record to 10-12 on the year. The Wildcats finish with a 3-6 conference record. Borgert scored 17 points in the match. Claybaugh had 13. Devon Golden and Katie Greve each had 10. One thing did go as planned for Wapakoneta Thursday. It was senior night and the team honored Katie Greve and Andrea Stauffer for their years of participation. Bath took the junior varsity match in three games, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16. Megan Miller got 15 points for the Redskin JV. Jessica Moots had 12. And in what has become a common occurrence this year, the Wapakoneta freshmen opened the evening with a two-game win over the Bath ninth graders. The win gave the Redskin freshmen a 9-0 league record and the WBL title. The Wapakoneta junior varsity will be back in action on Saturday when the Redskins travel to Bath for the WBL junior varsity tournament. The Redskin varsity will have a chance to avenge their earlier loss to Elida when the two teams meet at the sectional at Van Wert High School on Tuesday. Wapakoneta will play the Bulldogs at 6 p.m. |
