By TYLER FACCENDA Staff Writer LEWISTOWN — Unable to overpower the Indian Lake Lakers early in the first quarter, the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers boys’ basketball team dropped a non-league match in Saturday night action. The Tigers’ key player for the past few games, Riley Huffer, could capitalize on his height advantage against Waynesfield-Goshen foes until they clashed with the Lakers. Huffer’s counterpart, a 6-foot-6 junior, proved to be a formidable foe.
After the 70-34 loss, varsity coach Doug Foley of the Tigers said that he thought that his team would have come out better in the first quarter than what they displayed. Foley said he knew the Lakers’ height, the roster boasts five players taller than 6-foot, would present a problem for his Tigers. Adam Foley led the Tigers in his first game being the top scorer, contributing the game-high of 16 points, which was also made by two players of the Lakers. Also bringing in points for Waynesfield-Goshen were Stuart Spencer with 5 points, Adam Hickman and Riley Huffer with 4 points apiece, and Jake Sandusky with 2 points. Coach Foley didn’t know whether to attribute the lack of maturity that his players possessed, given the fact that only one player has returned with varsity experience to the squad this year, or that their schedule has been loaded for this week. Three players for the Lakers hit double digits in points on the night. Jared Troyer also made the game-high of points, tying with Foley of the Tigers, with 16 points. Also contributing big points were Stacy Jones and Isaac Riechert with 14 points each in the game. Waynesfield-Goshen made 11-of-47 shots, or 23 percent, and 4-of-11, or 36 percent, were taken from 3-point land. Indian Lake 31-of-57 shots, or 54 percent, and 5-of-14, or 36 percent, were taken from behind the 3-point arc. In the first half of the game, the Tigers were only able to score 19 points, 13 of which were dropped by Foley. These almost crucial points however were dwarfed by three consecutive baskets for 3 points a pop from Indian Lake late in the second quarter. Starting in the third quarter, the Tigers were unable to prevent consecutive streaks from the Lakers that continued throughout rest of the quarter. The 9-point and the following 12-point streaks sealed the win for the Lakers, despite the fact that they had slowly been gaining an edge. Starting things off for the home team, Troyer hit a 2-pointer in response of Tiger Huffer hitting the first two-points of the quarter. Rounding out the 9-point run was three 2-pointers and one free throw from Jones of the Lakers. The 12-point run was the icing on the cake that determined the winners of the game. For the Lakers, Troyer nailed a bucket from inside the paint. Followed by four baskets for 2-points, then finished off with two free throws from Ryan Jacobs. As a result of these streaks, the Lakers were 20 points ahead of the Tigers at the end of the quarter. In the previous quarter, the Lakers went on a run that was dominated by three 3-pointers, gaining the Lakers some footing for the next two quarters. Starting off the run, Money of Indian Lake dropped a 3-pointer, which was followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Lewis. Unable to stave off the Lakers, the Tigers played hard, but not hard enough to see the Lakers emerge as the victors of this highly intense match-up with a score of 70-34.
