By KRISTA HAYES Staff Writer Hoping to help save lives, the Wapakoneta Rotary Club is gearing up to hold it’s 34th annual blood clinic Saturday and a week later on March 20. During the two events scheduled to be held from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Grand Plaza Banquet Hall located at 913 Defiance St., preventive health screenings are to be preformed including a coronary risk profile and CBC, along with a standard 26 test blood chemistry profile to also be offered.
The standard 26 test blood chemistry profile includes electrolytes, renal function tests, cardiac and liver enzymes, lipid tests, complete blood count, red cell indices and white blood cell differential. The cost of the test is $30. For an additional $35, males can receive a (PSA) male prostate testing. Note that all tests including the prostate exam require 12 hours of fasting prior to administration. “Local doctors have encouraged these tests because of their low costs, and every year we hear reports of major and minor problems that have been discovered and are early enough to be successfully treated,” Wapakoneta Rotary Club Blood Clinic Committee Chair Philip Schlenker said. “A number of lives have been saved or improved because of this program.” Receiving $5 from each test administered to help support it’s various Rotary Club programs and activities, Schlenker said no appointments are necessary for the tests which will be administered by health officials with MedLab. “Cash or checks made to MedLab will be accepted,” Schlenker said. “We have been working with Medi-Lab for all but the first year of the blood clinic, and they now have changed their name to MedLab. “The turnout out for the last several years has been between 1,100 and 1,200 people,” he said. “We have also done a smaller session in the fall for those who are unable to come in the spring. The numbers for that have remained about 150 people, so we may eliminate that session unless more people start showing an interest.” The New Bremen and New Knoxville Rotary Club is also scheduled to hold its 21st annual blood testing clinic on two separate dates and locations — March 20 in the multi-purpose of New Knoxville School and March 27 in the commons area of New Bremen High School. Both events will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. This year’s blood drawing and testing will once again be conducted by health officials at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital. Test offerings this year include the basic health panel (CBC, glucose, electrolytes, iron, cholesterol, etc. — more than 30 tests total) for $45; PSA (prostate screening for males only) for $40; thyroid profile (thyroid function tests — T4, ultrasensative TSH) for $45; and the c-reaction protein (heart risk and inflammatory disorders assessment) for $20. Note that a 12-hour fasting is required prior to all testing. For more information, call New Bremen and New Knoxville Rotary Club Blood Test Clinic Chairman Ross Brown at 419-629-4248.
