By CHRIS VOLOSCHUK Sports Editor COLUMBUS — The day he turned 16, Wapakoneta Redskin wrestler Logan Erb went out and got a tattoo that read “Third Day”. The words, in black ink, were meant to serve as a constant reminder of his biggest athletic goal — reach the third day of the Division II state wrestling tournament in Columbus and place. Today in the 215-pound weight class, the junior will meet that goal of surviving to the final day of state and placing. But he will not do it alone. Unable to compete for first or second place in the state in their respective weight classes due to early losses, Wapak senior Tyler Matte and junior Jake Beemer are still very much alive in the tourney after two days, and are in the hunt for third place in the 189 and 119-pound divisions, respectively. Both are guaranteed to finish sixth or higher when today’s consolation bracket matches are finalized. Consolation matches in Div. II will start at 10 a.m. inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus. As for Erb, he will face Jake Henderson of Toledo Central Catholic, the same person who beat him at districts one week ago to the day. All championship matches will start at 5:45 p.m. To get to Saturday, Erb won a quarterfinal match over Navarre Fairless’ Beau Wenger in Friday’s first session and a semifinal match over Napoleon’s Cody Bloom later Friday evening. Matte and Beemer each wrestled three matches Friday. Both lost once, but won their first two consolation matches to advance. In total team points, Wapak currently ranks six in all of Div. II with 36.5, highest in school history. Erb is trying to become the first Wapak state champion since Brent Miller in 2000.
