By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Correspondent LIMA - The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity girls basketball team came out and dominated to win a Division IV sectional championship Saturday at the Lima Bath Gymnasium. “We came in here tonight and the girls were really focused,” Waynesfield-Goshen coach Ted Patton said... “Our intenstiy level was off the scale tonight.” “It feels great with what we went through at the beginning with all the injuries, and now we’re here where we are today,” said Tiger senior center Brooke Shaw, who got a late start on the season, before returning with her team’s record at 3-5. The Tigers won their 14th straight with a, 51-29, victory over the Ada Bulldogs and will advance to the Lima Senior district semifinal to play at 8 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Marion Local/New Knoxville-Ridgemont.
“We’ve just got to keep winning one at a time,” Shaw said. Leading the Tigers (17-5) on the night were freshman point guard Kaylee Patton with 16 points and six rebounds, junior shooting guard Shelby Gilroy with 11 points, and both junior forward Abbey Gray and sophomore forward Ivy Horn with eight points. In addition for Waynesfield-Goshen, Shaw had six points and 10 rebounds, and freshman center Kindsey Salyer-Watts added two points. Ada (8-13) was led by senior forward Malary Dumbaugh with 12 points. The Tigers jumped out to a, 15-2, first period lead and outscored their opponents, 16-7, in the second period to lead, 31-9, at halftime. The third period went to Waynesfield-Goshen, 12-6, for a 43-15 score and the final period went to Ada, 14-8, for the 23-point difference. “I’ve never been involved in a game where the intensity-level was so one-sided,” Ada coach Neal Dumbaugh said... “They were just more aggressive - I didn’t expect that.” The Tigers shot 21-of-51 from the field in the contest, including 2-of-8 from downtown, and were 7-of-11 from the stripe. Ada went 11-of-45 from the floor, including 2-of-13 from 3-point land, and were 5-of-10 at the line. The rebounding battle was won by the Tigers, 30-20, as well as the turnover ratio, 25-21.
