By MATT NICHOLS Staff Writer Old-school library patrons with an affinity for the card catalog will have an opportunity this weekend to learn about all the new services and programs area libraries have to offer. The Auglaize County Public District Library (ACPDL) is hosting its inaugural Library 101 Day on Saturday. The program is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main Wapakoneta branch and from 10 a.m. to noon at the other five branches in Cridersville, New Bremen, New Knoxville, Minster and Waynesfield. ACPDL Assistant Director Diana Schneider said the event gives patrons a chance to have questions answered they normally may not ask. “I think some people may be intimidated by the computers here,” Schneider said. “So we set aside a day specifically to encourage people to ask questions.”
Schneider said more staff members than typical will be on hand at the library on Saturday to field questions and concerns from patrons and provide them with a look at the technology the branches have. Among the tutorials to be offered during the Library 101 Day is one explaining the online public access catalogs (OPAC), which replaced the traditional card catalogs. WiFi and eBook tutorials also will be available as will the Libraries Share MORE program. Schneider said the MORE program allows patrons to request items from other public libraries across Ohio that may not be included at any of the local branches. Guided tours also will be arranged for those who Schneider said want to “see how they can find what they are seeking.” During the event, patrons can learn where and how to find accelerated reader books for the reading program which is utilized in many Ohio schools. Schneider said every school near a branch location utilizes the program except for Waynesfield schools. “Parents aren’t always sure how to find the books or know how to find the right reading level, so we hope to be able to help them with that,” Schneider said. Schneider said the event was conceived by a branch supervisor who looked at the event as a way to benefit her location. “She mentioned it and we thought that would be a great idea,” Schneider said. “So we decided to do it all on the same day throughout the whole system.”
