WAYNESFIELD - The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity boys basketball team picked up their second win of the year in a Northwest Central Conference tilt Friday night.
The Tigers improved to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the NWCC with a, 57-41, victory over the Upper Scioto Valley Rams. The big part of the win was contributed to a 20-1 run in the first half by Waynesfield-Goshen, which pushed a 12-11 end of the first period lead to a 32-12 lead with under two minutes until halftime.
“I just think it was our defensive pressure,” Waynesfield-Goshen coach Romie Youngpeter said of the Tigers second period run. “Tonight we really denied the wing good, better than we have all year.
“It was just a team effort, even on the offensive end I thought our ball movement was really good against their zone,” he added. “I thought we moved the ball - we were unselfish - for really the first time on offense all year.
Having a big night for Waynesfield-Goshen was senior power forward Matt Spangler with 17 points and four rebounds. He scored 14 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
“I was feeling it,” Spangler said. “Teammates were getting me the ball, ball movement was excellent tonight.”
Also contributing to the win for the Tigers were senior center Taylor Miller with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and junior small forward Cory Hickman with eight points and 12 rebounds, while coming off the bench was junior shooting guard Connor Mortimer with 12 points.
“All year we’ve been doing a good job on the boards,” Youngpeter said. “I think, that’s our one-big positive all year. I thought tonight we took care of the ball a little bit more than normal. Those two things - if you can win the rebounding battle and not have any turnovers, you are gonig to win games.”
Others involved in the win for Waynesfield-Goshen were shooting guard Todd Andrews with four points, shooting guard Jacob Frank with two points, and point guard Jerry Weeks with one point.
Upper Scioto Valley (1-8, 0-2) were led by shooting guard Brian Roberts with nine points, and center Colby Salyer with eight points.
Waynesfield-Goshen led 38-19 at the break. The key to the first half lead were limiting their turnovers to six, while forcing the visitors into 10 turnovers.
The Tigers also dominated on the glass with a 39-28 advantage for the contest.
The third period went to USV, 8-7, for a 47-27 score, and the final period also went to the visitors, 14-10, for the 16-point difference.
Waynesfield-Goshen shot 23-of-57 from the floor in the game, including 2-of-10 from downtown, and were 9-of-15 from the foul line. USV shot 13-of-49 from the field, including 1-of-10 from behind 3-point land, and were 14-of-22 at the stripe.
The junior varsity game went to the Tigers, 40-36. They were forced to play with four players for the final 1:04 of the game.
