Tigers falter against Columbus Grove
Wednesday, 30 December 2009

WAYNESFIELD - Hit with foul trouble early on the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers surrendered the inside game to the Columbus Grove Bulldogs and lost by 19 points Tuesday night.
“Taylor (Miller) is our cog in the middle, you take him out of there - we’re not real tough on the inside,” Tiger varsity basketball coach Romie Youngpeter said after a 56-37 non-conference loss.
The biggest difference on the night was Tiger center Miller was slapped with his third foul at 2:16 of the first period with the score tied at eight.
“When 35 (Miller) picked up his second, we made that a real emphasis to try and get him out of the game,” Columbus Grove coach Todd Turnwald said. “He’s a nice, wide-bodied kid, looks like he can score a little bit down there.
“We knew they were only going to play six-seven guys at the most, and we wanted to get into their bench a little bit,” he added. “And I thought we did that.”
With Miller on the bench, Columbus Grove went on a 22-2 run for a 30-10 lead with under 20 seconds to play in the first half. A basket by the Tigers with 15 seconds and a half-court shot at the buzzer made it 30-15 at the break.
Leading the Tigers (1-5) on the night was point guard Jerry Weeks with 14 points, as he scored 11 of the team’s 15 points in the first half. In addition, Miller had six points and six rebounds, while small forward Cory Hickman added six points and five rebounds.
Others for Waynesfield-Goshen were shooting guard Connor Mortimer with three points, power forward Matt Spangler with four points and five rebounds, Jacob Frank with two points and five rebounds, and Garrett Hauensteing with two points.
The Bulldogs (4-0) played 10 players most of the game with all 10 reaching the scoring column. Leading Columbus Grove on the night were center Luke Kole with 11 points and eight rebounds, power forward Adam Bair with 11 points and five rebounds, and guard Eli Ricker with 10 points.
“Their kind of our main guys for scoring,” Turnwald said of his two post players. “It can be kind of a tough matchup for some teams, because we’ve got two guys that are very similar in how they can score and how they play.... We’ve got a pretty good advantage down there.”
After one period of play, the Tigers were down 19-8, and were outscored 11-7 in the second period to trail, 30-15, at halftime. The third period went to the Bulldogs, 14-7, for a 44-22 lead, but Waynesfield-Goshen won the final period, 15-12, for the 56-37 final.
The Tigers shot 15-of-36 from the field in the contest, including 2-of-8 from downtown, and were 5-of-9 at the stripe. Columbus Grove went 23-of-54 from the floor, including 3-of-12 from behind 3-point land and were 7-of-12 at the foul line.
The turnover margin was won by the Bulldogs, 17-7, while Waynesfield-Goshen won the boards, 24-22.
The junior varsity game also went to the visitors, 65-31, as the Tigers were led by Hauensteing with 11 points. The Waynesfield-Goshen JV stands at 1-5 on the year.
