Past to future: Wintzer Co. finds artifacts during build

 Image

By JENNIFER TANGEMAN

Few people exhibit an enthusiasm about historical artifacts as Jim Bowsher does.
When crews working for G.A. Wintzer and Son Co. started working to build new office space on West Auglaize Street, they came across some interesting finds where a rental home had previously sat.
Jim Kent and others of Kent Surveying began finding pieces of artifacts. They called in local history buff, Bowsher, to try to figure out what the bits and pieces meant.

Old holiday lights can be reused
Wednesday, 30 December 2009
By MATT NICHOLS
Staff Writer
Residents have a new option to rid themselves of burned out or old Christmas lights following the holiday season.
The Auglaize County Recycling program added holiday lights to the list of items which can be recycled at Auglaize County recycling locations.
“There’s a company that started collecting the lights,” Auglaize County Recycling Director Dave Reichelderfer said. “So we’re going to start sending them over to them.”

Reichelderfer said the lights can be deposited at dropoff locations when they are manned on Saturdays. The strands also can be dropped off in the curbside boxes found in Wapakoneta and St. Marys.
“We thought this was the appropriate time to introduce this new recycling service as people take down their displays and plan on replacing some of them with new energy saving LED lights or the winter wind and weather has made them unfunctionable,” Reichelderfer said.
The lights cannot be dropped off at any 24-hour dropoff sites as there is no chute to place them.
The program director said any holiday light strands, whether they’re for Halloween, Christmas or New Year’s can be deposited. The program also will be available all year long.
“I know there’s folks who have red, white and blue lights during the Fourth of July,” Reichelderfer said. “They can bring the lights in at any time.”
Bulbs do not need to be removed prior to depositing the strands.
“We think this is going to be nice program,” Reichelderfer said. “It’s just another way to keep things out of the landfill.”
Any questions or comments about the light recycling can be made by calling the Auglaize County Solid Waste office at 419-394-1270 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
